Animal neighbours
Many wild animals have adapted to living alongside humans in the landscapes we have created. For instance, sea otters swim in the man-made harbours of California. Prairie dogs that have been driven off the prairies by farmers have found homes on urban playgrounds. English foxes now doze on suburban roofs and eat from our litter bins. In the south-west of the USA, acorn woodpeckers store their acorns in fir trees that have been turned into telegraph poles. Ospreys typically build their nests at the very tops of trees, but telegraph poles will also do since they give the ospreys just the isolation they need. Also, instead of rocky crags, kestrels will just as happily use church towers as their nest sites.
