A lynx is hunting for blue hares in a snow-covered Scandinavian forest. Although she has large cubs they are not yet skilled enough to hunt for themselves, so must rely on her for food. The cost of a hunt is precisely calculated. If a lynx does not catch the hare within 200 yards, then the meat attained will not make up for the loss of energy so it will give up. Bigger prey like roe deer, however, are pursued for much longer as one deer will feed the whole family. In this cold climate, animals must take whatever they can and an eagle owl will happily scavenge a deer carcass, until it is frightened off by a hungry wolverine.
