Flamingo feed
Hot volcanic springs in the Africa's Rift Valley support crops of bacteria and small floating algae that feed on them. Here, as many as a million lesser and greater flamingos come to feed on the single-celled algae that proliferate in vast quantities in these steaming soda-rich waters. Flocks like these remove 150 tonnes of the microscopic algae every day. Their bills have seives inside that strain off the algae as the water passes through them.
