Gareth Bale is the 91Èȱ¬ Cymru Wales Sports Personality of the Year 2010

Gareth Bale has been named as the 91Èȱ¬ Cymru Wales Sports Personality of the Year 2010 following the results of a public vote. The result was revealed on 91Èȱ¬ Wales' television, radio and online services this evening.

The award was announced at the prestigious 91Èȱ¬ Cymru Wales Sports Personality of the Year 2010 Awards Ceremony held at the 2010 Ryder Cup Clubhouse at the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport earlier this evening, which celebrated the past year in Welsh sport.

Cardiff-born Gareth Bale has had a standout season for Premiership club Tottenham Hotspur, and has also continued playing for Wales. Gareth Bale is regarded as one of the best footballers in the world.

Also honoured at the event were the team of the year, Welsh Sports Unsung Hero, Lifetime Achievement Award and Carwyn James Junior Sportsman and Junior Sportswoman of the Year.

The winners of the main awards are:

Team of the Year: Newport County
Welsh Sports Unsung Hero: Lisa Jones
Lifetime Achievement Award: Brian Huggett MBE
Carwyn James Junior Sportsman of the Year: Sean McGoldrick
Carwyn James Junior Sportswoman of the Year: Jade Jones

Team of the Year: Newport County

Newport County are the Blue Square South champions 2009-2010, taking over 100 points. The team has gone on to make a good start in the Blue Square Premier this year, and at the time of writing are in the play-off places for a return to the Football League.

Welsh Sports Unsung Hero: Lisa Jones

Lisa Jones is the Junior football coach from Penydarren Boys & Girls Football Club in Merthyr. She has been coaching for eight years and coaches three teams in her spare time, working with over 100 children per week. "A true inspiration to all who know her, children love her, she never puts herself first and is always thinking of others," said her nominee for the award.

As winner, Lisa will go forward to the national 91Èȱ¬ Sports Personality of the Year 2010 awards to be held at the LG Arena in Birmingham on Sunday 19 December, where the overall UK winner will be chosen.

Lifetime Achievement: Brian Huggett MBE

Porthcawl-born Brian Huggett MBE has had a phenomenal golfing career, taking a total of 16 European Tour wins, 10 on the Seniors circuit, and six Ryder Cup appearances for Great Britain and Ireland, and has also been a non-playing captain for the event.

Carwyn James Junior Sportsman of the Year: Sean McGoldrick

Newport's Sean McGoldrick was a Commonwealth Games medallist while still at school, taking the silver boxing medal during the bantamweight final in Delhi in October.

Carwyn James Junior Sportswoman of the Year: Jade Jones

Jade Jones from Flintshire was the under 55kg Taekwondo gold medal winner at the Youth Olympics in Singapore in August.
