Radio 1's 10th Big Weekend serves up bumper line-up in Bangor

Radio 1's Big Weekend 2009 in Swindon

Florence & The Machine, Rihanna, Alicia Keys, Dizzee Rascal, Pendulum and Cheryl Cole will all perform at 91Èȱ¬ Radio 1's Big Weekend – the station's annual music extravaganza - which takes place at Vaynol Estate, Bangor, North Wales on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 May.

Chris Moyles unveiled the spectacular line-up of over 30 UK and international artists who will be playing on the two main stages during his show this morning (26 April, 6.30-10am) with a bit of help from fellow Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe.

Other artists set for Radio 1's Big Weekend are Scouting for Girls, Biffy Clyro and JLS plus Welsh bands the Lostprophets, Kids in Glass Houses and Marina & the Diamonds.

Radio 1's Big Weekend is the station's flagship event and the UK's biggest free ticketed festival. Forty-thousand lucky music fans can enjoy performances from four stages in Vaynol Estate – the Main Stage; the In New Music We Trust Stage; the Outdoor Stage and the 91Èȱ¬ Introducing Stage.

For listeners tuning in there will also be exclusive Live Lounge sessions broadcast from backstage.

Jason Carter, Editor, Live Music & Events, Radio 1, says: "We've pulled out all the stops for our tenth Radio 1's Big Weekend with an outstanding line-up of the best UK and international talent, along with new and emerging artists.

"It's a great opportunity to put a national focus on North Wales as Radio 1 brings two days of distinctive programming encompassing the very best live music, fantastic sets and some original collaborations. And no-one has to miss any of it as it will be on radio, online, on TV and the Red Button!"

Iwan Trefor Jones, Corporate Director, Gwynedd Council, says: "We're very proud to welcome these talented artists to Gwynedd. Our unique combination of breathtaking mountains and coastline will provide a fantastic backdrop for Radio 1's Big Weekend. We look forward to showing the world what makes Gwynedd a great place to live, work and visit."

Alun Ffred Jones, Minister for Heritage, National Assembly for Wales, adds: "I am delighted this major musical event is coming to Wales next month. A truly multiplatform experience, Radio 1's Big Weekend will be broadcast on Radio 1, with a major interactive presence online at bbc.co.uk/radio1 and many live performances available to watch on demand. There will be highlights on 91Èȱ¬ Three and extended performances can be seen via the Red Button on digital TV during the weekend. Registration for tickets opens at 9am on Monday 26 April and closes at 7pm on Monday 3 May at bbc.co.uk/radio1.

There are 40,000 tickets available across the weekend. Tickets are free, but last year over 350,000 people applied for them and demand is expected to be huge again this year.

Each lucky applicant will receive a pair of tickets for either Saturday or Sunday. The event goes to a different area in the UK each year and Radio 1 will again give priority to applicants in the region. Tickets will be allocated randomly, but weighted in favour of those living in Bangor and across North Wales, with a smaller amount distributed nationally.

Throughout the weekend, Radio 1 DJs including Chris Moyles, Fearne Cotton, Greg James, Scott Mills, Zane Lowe, Vernon Kay, Jo Whiley, Edith Bowman, Annie Mac and Nick Grimshaw will be introducing the bands on stage and broadcasting from the event.
