Radio 3's Jazz Line-Up celebrates its 10th anniversary this April with special studio concert

Jazz Line-Up first hit the airwaves in 2000, rapidly becoming a jazz highlight of the 91Èȱ¬ Radio 3 schedule.

To mark a decade of exploring jazz music both from the mainstream and emerging younger artists, Jazz Line-Up will hold a special concert on Thursday 1 April at the 91Èȱ¬'s Pacific Quay studios in Glasgow. The concert will be broadcast by Radio 3 on Sunday 4 April at 11.30pm.

This special evening of live music will be presented by Claire Martin, who has presented Jazz Line-Up since the first show. Claire will also be joined by fellow presenters Julian Joseph and Kevin le Gendre.

Jazz Line-Up has always majored on UK Jazz and the 10th anniversary programme celebrates this with trumpeter Colin Steele merging Celtic with Jazz with his group Stranash.

Other guests include pianist Gareth Williams and his Power Trio, and Geoff Gascoigne brings his Pop Bop band to the studio, featuring veteran Scottish guitarist Jim Mullen who featured in the first ever Jazz Line-Up a decade ago.

Over the past decade, Jazz Line-Up has seen live broadcasts from the Bath, Cheltenham and Wavendon Jazz Festivals, Edinburgh Festival and Julian Joseph Live from the Islay Jazz Festival.

Radio 3's partnership with the London Jazz Festival included memorable broadcasts such as the merging of the 91Èȱ¬ Big Band with classic American Band Leaders Roy Hargrove, Randy Weston and Lennie Niehaus, among others. Other highlights included interviews with Brandford and Wynton Marsalis, Dianne Reeves, Tony Bennett, Chick Corea, Michael Brecker, Colin Townes, Django Bates, John Surman, Stan Tracey, Harry Connick Jr, Diana Krall, Andre Previn and Tania Maria.

Roger Wright, Controller of 91Èȱ¬ Radio 3 and Director of the Proms, said: "Jazz is a vital part of Radio 3's music output and I am delighted that Jazz Line-Up is celebrating its 10th birthday with this special event and broadcast, reflecting the programme's unique commitment to live British jazz."

Claire Martin said: "It is a real pleasure being part of the Jazz Line-Up team – I've learnt so much about broadcasting and have interviewed some of my heroes which has been quite amazing! Ten years have flown by and I still love every minute."

Notes to Editors
