91Èȱ¬ Radio 1 and 91Èȱ¬ Radio 1Xtra are set to bring an exciting mix of live music, new music, entertainment and DJs to audiences throughout the UK in 2010.
Unveiling the network's live events programmes for the year, Radio 1 has confirmed it will once again be at all the major UK festivals including Glastonbury, Reading/Leeds, T in the Park, Download and Creamfields.
And, for the first time, the station will visit Rockness and Wakestock festivals – two fantastic new additions to the line-up.
Radio 1 kicks off the UK festival season with its flagship event – Radio 1's Big Weekend, which this year celebrates its tenth weekend, in Bangor on 22 and 23 May with more than 50 UK and international acts performing across four stages to 40,000 music fans.
The station visits Newcastle upon Tyne in March for In New Music We Trust Live – showcasing the station's specialist content over three nights with DJs including Zane Lowe, Annie Mac and Trevor Nelson hosting special shows with live music from the city.
In May the Essential Mix chalks up an incredible 500 shows so they'll be marking the milestone with a special programme from Liverpool; later in the year the Live Lounge will be taking UK music stars on tour; and the year ends with the Festive Festival – a showcase of the best new specialist music for 2011.
In August, after the runaway success of Scott Mills The Musical at last year's Edinburgh Fringe, Radio 1 is going back to Scotland – with Scott Mills and Nick Grimshaw on a mission to uncover the best in new young comedy talent.
In the autumn, Zane Lowe and Fearne Cotton head for universities around the UK; and Switch Live is back, promising to be bigger and better than ever.
Jason Carter, Editor, 91Èȱ¬ Live Music & Events, says: "Our programme of events demonstrates our continued commitment to providing a platform for live music, and getting around the UK to engage with our audiences in their own backyards.
"We're proud to be hosting our tenth Radio 1's Big Weekend – the event is an outstanding success, making a huge impact on the areas it visits both culturally and economically while evolving every year to bring original and creative content to our audiences."
Radio 1's sister station, Radio 1Xtra, is stepping out around the UK more than ever before in 2010, visiting four major cities across the year – starting with London in April to celebrate the full range of the network's content; 1Xtra Live, the station's flagship event returns; there's NASS fest in July; the Notting Hill Carnival in August; and a Mistajam university tour in the autumn.
Jason Carter adds: "It's important for 91Èȱ¬ Radio 1Xtra to connect with audiences around the UK so going to major cities to showcase our content is an ideal way to do this.
"I'm really looking forward to the station's flagship event 1Xtra Live too – it will be its biggest ever showcasing the very best UK and international hip-hop and r'n'b acts."
91Èȱ¬ Introducing, the 91Èȱ¬'s initiative giving unsigned, undiscovered and under-the-radar musicians discovered across the 91Èȱ¬ a chance to play, will have stages at the major festivals again in 2010 – Radio 1's Big Weekend, Glastonbury, T in the Park and Reading & Leeds; and 91Èȱ¬ Introducing makes its debut at the London Mela in the summer too!
