Performances by guitarist Bill Frisell, jazz bassist Dave Holland and saxophonist John Surman are amongst the broadcast highlights of 91Èȱ¬ Radio 3's coverage of the London Jazz Festival which begins on 13 November.
Radio 3 continues to spotlight emerging artists and a particular highlight is the new choral work of the precociously-talented former 91Èȱ¬ New Generation Jazz Artist Gwilym Simcock. His piece, I Prefer the Gorgeous Freedom, will receive its London premiere at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on 21 November and will be broadcast on Radio 3 on 27 December.
In addition to the range of musical performances on offer, Radio 3 will broadcast interviews with some of the festival's leading lights including jazz guitarist John Scofield, pianist Vijay Iyer, vocalist Sheila Jordan and saxophonists Branford Marsalis and John Surman. Radio 3's Jazz Library will also broadcast an exclusive interview with Dame Cleo Laine on 14 November.
Other artists whose festival performances will be heard on Radio 3 include Helge Lien Trio, guitarist and composer Joel Harrison and jazz trumpeter Tomasz Stanko.
Radio 3 will also be broadcasting Carla Bley's gig. Bley, a constantly evolving performer and bandleader, is a big name in contemporary American jazz, and will be reunited with her Lost Chords quartet featuring leading UK saxophonist Andy Sheppard, US bass luminary Steve Swallow and great US drummer Billy Drummond.
Radio 3's coverage of the London Jazz Festival begins on 13 November 13 ar 10.30pm when Radio 3's Jazz On 3 presenter, Jez Nelson, introduces a stellar line-up of artists appearing at this year's festival including the rising young band Empirical, guitarist John Scofield and vibraphone virtuoso Bobby Hutcherson.
Radio 3 will be recording much of the festival and performances will be featured throughout the Radio 3 schedule on Jazz On 3, Jazz Line-Up, Performance On 3, Afternoon On 3, Discovering Music and In Tune. There will also be special London Jazz Festival themed editions of Jazz Library.
