Six talented teenagers are the winners of the 11th 91Èȱ¬ Proms Inspire Young Composers Competition, which aims to help creative young people gain skills and confidence in expressing themselves through music.
The winning works will be performed by the Aurora Orchestra at a free 91Èȱ¬ Proms concert at the Royal College of Music on Friday 14 August, as part of the Proms Plus programme, and recorded for broadcast on 91Èȱ¬ Radio 3 on Wednesday 19 August 2009.
The overall winner will also receive a commission to be performed and recorded by 91Èȱ¬ musicians at the 2010 Inspire events.
For the first time, selected winners will be invited to write fanfares for the world-famous Last Night Of The Proms, to be heard by countless millions of people around the world.
They are to work with composers and professional musicians over the next two months perfecting their fanfares, which will feature as part of the Royal Albert Hall's link up with the Proms In The Park celebrations around the country.
Details of the selected winners and the fanfares will be announced nearer the time.
The judges, who were once again impressed with the standard of works submitted this year, included composers Fraser Trainer, Tansy Davies, Stuart MacRae and Peter Wiegold, as well Radio 3's Executive Producer for New Music, Andrew Kurowski.
Kurowski, who has been a judge in all 11 competitions, commented on the standard: "I think it's worth sticking my neck out and saying, it is a vintage year."
All entrants are invited to the 91Èȱ¬ Proms Inspire day on Friday 14 August where there are workshops, talks and the chance to hear the winning pieces performed by the Aurora Orchestra. Up to 400 teenagers from around the country are expected to attend.
The day culminates with the evening Proms concert at the Royal Albert Hall, where Martyn Brabbins conducts the 91Èȱ¬ Symphony Orchestra in music by Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood, Stravinsky as well as Birtwistles's The Mask of Orpheus – The Arches.
The top ten entrants, listed below, are to have their music performed on Friday 14 August.
