Nine BAFTA nominations for 91Èȱ¬: Revolutionary Road, The Duchess, Man On Wire, Of Time And The City

Revolutionary Road

Having won a Golden Globe on Sunday evening, Kate Winslet's remarkable central performance in Sam Mendes' Revolutionary Road was rewarded with a BAFTA nomination this morning, complementing the film's other three nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay (Justin Haythe), Production Design (Kristi Zea/Debra Schutt) and Costume Design (Albert Wolsky).

Based on the celebrated novel by Richard Yates, this heart-rending story of thwarted passion and the search for fulfilment opens across the UK on 30 January 2009 following its UK premiere this Sunday (18 January).

Producers are John N Hart, Scott Rudin, Sam Mendes and Bobby Cohen.

Saul Dibb's The Duchess, the best performing independent film at the UK box office in 2008, received two BAFTA nominations – Costume Design (Michael O'Connor) and Make-Up/Hair (Daniel Phillips/Jan Archibald).

Producers are Michael Kuhn and Gabrielle Tana. Pathé distributed the film in the UK, and handle world sales.

James Marsh's double Sundance 2008 winner Man On Wire picked up two BAFTA nominations in the shape of Outstanding British Film and a Carl Foreman Award nomination for producer Simon Chinn.

A feature-length documentary produced by Wall To Wall in association with Red Box Films for Discovery Films, 91Èȱ¬ Storyville and the UK Film Council, the film is the dramatic retelling of Philippe Petit's daring, and illegal, scheme to walk the high-wire between New York's Twin Towers as they were completing construction in 1974 – the artistic crime of the 20th century.

Icon handled the smash hit UK release in the UK.

The huge success of Terence Davies' Cannes smash Of Time And The City was recognised by BAFTA in the shape of a Carl Foreman Award nomination for producers Sol Papadopoulos and Roy Boulter of Hurricane Films.

The film is one of three features produced for Liverpool Capital of Culture 2008 through the Digital Departures initiative, a joint venture by Northwest Vision and Media, 91Èȱ¬ Films and the Liverpool Culture Company.

Following on from the good news from BAFTA, there is a very encouraging early buzz for two 91Èȱ¬ Films titles at the Sundance Festival, In The Loop and An Education.

Armando Iannucci's razor-sharp political comedy In The Loop stars Tom Hollander, James Gandolfini, Chris Addison, Peter Capaldi, Gina McKee and Steve Coogan, and is produced by Kevin Loader and Adam Tandy.

The US President and UK Prime Minister suddenly fancy a war. But it'll be quick this time. Promise! The US General Miller doesn't think so and the British Secretary of State for International Development, Simon Foster, agrees with him. But, after Simon accidentally backs military action on primetime TV, he suddenly has a lot of friends in Washington, DC.

Optimum will release the film in the UK, and Protagonist are handling international sales.

Lone Scherfig's An Education stars Peter Sarsgaard, Carey Mulligan, Alfred Molina, Rosamund Pike, Cara Seymour, Dominic Cooper, Olivia Williams and Emma Thompson.

Nick Hornby wrote the script about a 17-year-old girl who meets an older man in Sixties London. Finola Dwyer and Amanda Posey produce, with Odyssey Entertainment handling worldwide sales.

Kenneth Turan of the LA Times commented: "Probably the jewel of all the festival's dramatic films, and sure to be one of the best films of the year, is An Education, the new work from Denmark's accomplished Lone Scherfig..... Working here with top screenwriter Nick Hornby (High Fidelity) and actors Peter Sarsgaard and, in a breakout performance, Carey Mulligan, Scherfig has created an effortlessly involving film about a British high school girl, circa 1961, who meets an older man. This is one not to be missed."
