Radio Jersey breakfast presenter dies aged 46
|
91Èȱ¬ Radio Jersey's breakfast presenter John Uphoff has died in
hospital at the age of 46.
Ìý
He had been in a coma for three weeks and had been diagnosed with
a serious viral infection. His wife Jan was with him.
Ìý
For thousands of islanders John Uphoff was the man they woke up
to. His no-nonsense approach to life, his desire to prick
pomposity and his mischievous sense of humour were the mainstay of
his early-morning double-act alongside Roger Bara.
Ìý
John was taken ill early in July. He was admitted to the
Intensive Care Unit in Jersey and then transferred to
Southampton.
Ìý
He died in the care of the staff of the Neurological
Intensive Care Unit in Southampton, to where he was airlifted two
weeks ago.
Ìý
John was born in Bradford in 1961 and, after being educated in the
city, studied electronics at the local technical college.
Ìý
His broadcasting career began in 1978, when he became a presenter
on a student radio station.
Ìý
He subsequently worked for the commercial broadcasters Pennine
Radio and The Pulse in West Yorkshire, Viking Radio in Hull and
Channel 103 in Jersey.
Ìý
He joined 91Èȱ¬ Jersey in 2002 to present the Saturday Show, taking
on responsibility for the weekday morning show, too, the following
year.
Ìý
But it has been as 91Èȱ¬ Jersey's breakfast presenter, alongside
Roger Bara, for more than a year that he will be best remembered.
Ìý
Their unique take on life and unpredictable banter quickly became
a must for thousands of islanders every morning. Ìý
