Ruby Rainbow appeal revved up to over £610,000
|
91Èȱ¬ Radio Leicester's Ruby Rainbows fundraiser concludes today when the station's Managing Editor Kate
Squire hands over a cheque that brings the total the station has
raised for Loughborough's Rainbows Hospice to over £610,000.
Ìý
A recent motorcycle ride from Leicester to John O'Groats by Radio Leicester presenter Ben Jackson raised £1,000 towards the appeal.
Ìý
Ben's "back up" on the mammoth road trip, Jim Darcy from Charnwood Classic Restoration, will bestride his two-wheeled machine to deliver the station's final cheque to the children's hospice.
Ìý
The grand total exceeds by more than £210,000 the station's original aim to raise £400,000 towards the Rainbows' proposed £4million extension that will offer respite and palliative care to teenagers and young adults throughout the East Midlands.
Ìý
The bulk of the money has been raised by the listening public who have organised a myriad fundraising events in and around Leicestershire during the year.
Ìý
Attendees at the final cheque delivering ceremony are expected to include Leicester City's Alan Birchenall; Gary Hunt, Leicester's Lord Mayor; and Mike Jones, chairperson of Leicester County Council.
Ìý
Kate Squire says of the appeal: "This is a magnificent achievement by our listeners! A much bigger total than we ever thought – but 91Èȱ¬ Radio Leicester listeners are a resourceful lot and this is a cause they took to their hearts.
Ìý
"What a fantastic way to celebrate our 40th birthday! A lasting legacy for everyone in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland."
Ìý
Radio Leicester's Dave Andrews, who masterminded the whole appeal, added: "We had such great support from so many people – Engelbert Humperdinck who was the Appeal's patron; Leicester's Lord Mayor Gary Hunt who adopted it; Leicester City's Alan Birchenall who raised over £28,000 through his end of season run; local businesses like Next and also the staff and students of De Montford University and Leicester College."
