Tune into the Dawn Chorus with Radio Devon
|
A chorus of featherless Dawns and 91Èȱ¬ Radio Devon are flocking together to form a choir from scratch as part of a nationwide celebration of Dawn Chorus Day which takes place between 28 April and 4 May 2008.
Ìý
As a unique way to mark the early morning bird-song that is the Dawn Chorus, Radio Devon began searching for women called Dawn to form a new singing group at the beginning of April.
Ìý
After weeks of searching, seven local women have volunteered their services, or have been volunteered by helpful family members!
Ìý
- Dawn Wall from Torquay
- Dawn Gingell from Yealmpton
- Dawn Crawford from Teignmouth
- Dawn Kingston from Liskear
- Dawn Melville from Plymouth
- Dawn Sherrell from Tavistock
Ìý
The Dawns have been put through their paces by vocal coach Sandra Smith from Buckfastleigh. For some of them it is the first time they have sung since school.
Ìý
The Radio Devon Dawn Chorus began rehearsals recently and are booked in to record two songs at the 91Èȱ¬ studios in Plymouth on Saturday (26 April).
Ìý
The station is broadcasting the songs during a week of special programming, from 28 April to 4 May, celebrating the Dawn Chorus.
Ìý
Listeners are also encouraged to get up just after 4.00am and listen to the amazing sounds of the Dawn Chorus from their bedroom windows.
Ìý
The end of April and beginning of May sees the Dawn Chorus reach its peak, as the songs of the UK's resident bird species are joined by the return of summer visitors such as chiffchaffs and nightingales.
Ìý
Radio Devon, as part of the 91Èȱ¬ Breathing Places campaign, is joining forces with local wildlife organisations, including RSPB, Torbay Coast and Countryside Agency, during the special week of programming to bring the wonder of birdsong to people across the county.
Ìý
Sunday 4 May is International Dawn Chorus Day, and all over the Bank Holiday weekend there are Dawn Chorus events taking place.
Ìý
For further information on these events and the week of programming, visit bbc.co.uk/devon.
Ìý
Listeners can hear the Dawn Chorus, both the female and feathered variety, on Radio Devon's breakfast show each weekday morning, between 6.00 and 9.00am, from 28 April onwards.
Ìý
91Èȱ¬ Radio Devon broadcasts on 103.4, 94.8, 95.7, 95.8, 96 and 104.3 FM, online and on digital radio.
