New Head of Region for 91Èȱ¬ in North East and Cumbria

The 91Èȱ¬ announced today that Phil Roberts, the current Acting Managing Editor of 91Èȱ¬ Radio Merseyside, is to be the new Head of the 91Èȱ¬ in the North East and Cumbria.

Phil knows the region well having been Managing Director at Metro Radio in Newcastle in the late Nineties.
Ìý
Phil has had an extensive radio career having become the youngest commercial radio Managing Director at the age of 26 – running Red Dragon FM in Cardiff.

He started his career in his hometown of Wrexham where he presented the breakfast show on MFM for five years before joining Emap Radio in 1995.
Ìý
In 2000, Phil became Emap's Group Programme Director responsible for the group's big city output and launching the Smash Hits radio show which went on to win a Sony Radio Gold.

In 2002, Phil was voted as the most influential person in music radio after he was appointed as Managing Director for music and events at Emap.
Ìý
Phil joined the 91Èȱ¬ in 2005 as Managing Editor of 91Èȱ¬ Radio Leeds before joining Radio Merseyside on attachment last summer.

He says: "The North East and Cumbria is a fantastic region to work in and I am so excited to be returning to the area and working with the talented team at the 91Èȱ¬ to reflect the needs of the audience.

"I am also looking forward to having the opportunity to champion the region within the wider 91Èȱ¬."

Phil's role makes him one of the most senior managers within the 91Èȱ¬.
Ìý
He will be responsible for all the 91Èȱ¬'s output from the region including 91Èȱ¬ Radio Newcastle, 91Èȱ¬ Radio Cumbria, 91Èȱ¬ Tees, Look North, Inside Out and the local websites.

He will also represent the region to the 91Èȱ¬ nationally and be involved in the production of network programmes from the region.

Phil will take over from the current post-holder Wendy Pilmer in early May 2008.
