Calzaghes plan knockout assault on the charts

Enzo Calzaghe and his brother Sergio may be known as the team behind the international success of Joe Calzaghe, the undisputed super-middleweight champion of the world but, as is revealed in a special 91Èȱ¬ Radio Wales programme on Easter Sunday, 23 March, they are also knockout song writers.

Ìý

In the programme, I'll Show You Mine: Calzaghe Special (Sunday 23 March, 91Èȱ¬ Radio Wales, 8.00pm), Frank Hennessy talks to Joe's father and trainer Enzo and his uncle Sergio who reveal the musical side of the Calzaghe dynasty with the global debut of their song Summer Boy.

Ìý

The track, written by Enzo and Sergio, was recorded in a little studio set up by the brothers within their Newbridge gym with Sergio on lead vocals, Enzo and Joe on backing vocals and all the instruments played by the brothers.

Ìý

"This is what we do on the beach in Italy, looking at all the girls go by," says Sergio talking about the song.

Ìý

"We thought let's have something more relaxing, something with a summer feel to it. So the clocks have gone back once again and we want to say, basically, I wish it was summer again."

Ìý

And in the programme Enzo reveals that the plan is to release the track as a single at some point in the future.

Ìý

But Sergio points out that the single has to take second place for now: "Of course we've got to get all this boxing out the way first, we've got these big fights to sort out. Boxing is our first thing. But when we do the record, Joe is going to be involved as well, but obviously now is not the right time before the fight."

Ìý

During the course of the special two-hour programme listeners also learn how the Calzaghe brothers were closely linked to the popular Sixties/Seventies comedy pop group The Barron Knights, who signed them to a management deal.

Ìý

"We did these big gigs at the time supporting Bucks Fizz, Paul Young, Edwin Starr and Shirley Bassey," says Sergio.

Ìý

But with his elder brother having three children to support, it was hard to keep juggling family and the music, and Enzo made the decision to quit the band.

Ìý

Sergio says this was a crucial decision for Enzo and for the world of boxing.

Ìý

"It was probably the best thing he could have done," says Sergio. "Because if we had moved to Milton Keynes (where the Barron Knights were based) maybe there'd be no Joe Calzaghe today, because obviously it would have been a totally different environment from Wales."

Ìý

The programme also features the first play anywhere in the world of the flip-side of the Calzaghe's planned assault on the charts, Forever Raining.

Ìý

"Forever Raining, it's about Wales, innit!", jokes Enzo.

Ìý

I'll Show You Mine: Calzaghe Special is broadcast on 91Èȱ¬ Radio Wales on Easter Sunday, 23 March, 8.00-10.00pm and is repeated on Easter Monday, 24 March at 8.00pm.
