Sir Terry Wogan voted Radio 2 listeners' Ultimate Icon

91Èȱ¬ Radio 2 listeners have chosen Sir Terry Wogan as their Ultimate Icon of the last 40 years, in a vote held as part of the network's 40th birthday celebrations.

The winner was announced today, Sunday 30 September, on Family Favourites With Michael Aspel during a day of special programming marking Radio 2's anniversary.

Sir Terry says: "I've always suspected that the great British public thought of me in the same way as a great piece of art or great work of art...
Ìý
"I just hope this result doesn't mean they want to hang me somewhere."

Over the past weeks Radio 2 has invited listeners to nominate and vote for the icon who, for them, best represents the last four decades.

From a nominated shortlist of 16, listeners voted The Beatles; Diana, Princess of Wales; Nelson Mandela; and Sir Terry Wogan into the final.

The Beatles came second, followed by Nelson Mandela, and Diana, Princess of Wales.

The shortlisted names were (in alphabetical order): Muhammad Ali; The Beatles; David Bowie; Kate Bush; David Cassidy; Lara Croft; Diana, Princess of Wales; Michael Jackson; John Lennon; Nelson Mandela; Sir Paul McCartney; Morrissey; Donny Osmond; Elvis Presley; Sir Cliff Richard; and Sir Terry Wogan.
