91Èȱ¬ Four gets turned on to Andrew Davies' steamy adaptation of Fanny Hill

Alison Steadman, Hugo Speer and Samantha Bond lead the cast in a raunchy new version of John Cleland's saucy 18th century novel Fanny Hill.

Ìý

Adapted by Andrew Davies for 91Èȱ¬ Four, Fanny Hill is the story of a young country girl who falls into prostitution in bawdy 18th century London. Forced to take a succession of lovers to survive, she slowly rises to respectability but only after enjoying wholeheartedly the fruits of her labour.

Ìý

Cleland wrote Fanny Hill, considered the original erotic novel, whilst in debtors prison in 1748 and it has remained a firm literary favourite ever since.

Ìý

Newcomer Rebecca Night stars as the eponymous heroine. Playing Charles, Fanny's true love, will be another young actor – Alex Robertson.

Ìý

Alison Steadman (Gavin And Stacey, Pride And Prejudice) plays Mrs Brown, owner of a house of ill-repute, who first introduces Fanny into the "oldest profession in the world".

Ìý

Samantha Bond (The World Is Not Enough, Distant Shores) plays Mrs Coles, owner of a rival establishment, and Hugo Speer (Bleak House, The Full Monty) is Mr H, one of Fanny's more generous but demanding benefactors.

Ìý

Eleanor Moran, Executive Producer for the 91Èȱ¬, says: "We are delighted that Andrew Davies is returning to 91Èȱ¬ Four with this adaptation of Fanny Hill.

Ìý

"Fanny Hill is a joyous story whose central character has a real passion and zest for life.

Ìý

"Andrew's adaptation brings out the joie de vivre of the novel, and is full of his trademark good humour and naughty wit."

Ìý

Speaking about the adaptation, Andrew Davies says: "Fanny Hill is a book I have enjoyed a lot over the years but I never thought it would be commissioned. I am delighted we will be able to introduce the audience to the novel's great literary qualities as well as its more erotic elements."

Ìý

Fanny Hill was commissioned by Jane Tranter, Controller, 91Èȱ¬ Fiction, and is being made for 91Èȱ¬ Four by Sally Head Productions whose previous productions include Fingersmith, Tipping The Velvet, The Mayor Of Casterbridge and A Good Murder.

Ìý

Fanny Hill is directed by James Hawes whose previous credits include Doctor Who, Marie Lloyd and The Chatterley Affair.

Ìý

The drama is scheduled to be broadcast in autumn 2007.
