Radio 3 and Asian Network return to WOMAD as festival celebrates 25th anniversary

91Èȱ¬ Radio 3 returns to WOMAD for the seventh year as the festival moves to a new home in Charlton Park, Malmesbury, Wiltshire, and celebrates its 25th anniversary.

Ìý

Broadcasting live from the festival over the weekend of 27 to 29 July), Radio 3 hosts its own stage for the second year running, this time in the site's picturesque Arboretum.

Ìý

After the warm welcome given last year, the 91Èȱ¬ Asian Network is back at WOMAD with the Asian Network Tent and Station Wagon, a converted ambulance which will appear at Asian Network live music events throughout the summer.

Ìý

Performances on the Radio 3 stage showcase a range of music by artists from around the world including El Tanbura from Egypt; Bhangra's biggest selling artist, Malkit Singh; ska-playing East European gypsy band from Brussels, Jaune Toujours; Finnish-Norwegian group, Frigg, whose Scandinavian folk will be making its UK debut; and Mali's acclaimed Bassekou Kouyate, described by Taj Mahal as a genius – living proof that the blues comes from the region of Segu.

Ìý

Broadcast highlights include Mexican singer-songwriter Lila Downs and a headlining set from Senegalese singer, guitarist, dancer, composer and cultural icon Baaba Maal.

Ìý

Introduced by Andrew McGregor, Verity Sharp and Lucy Duran, Radio 3 broadcasts live sets from the main stage, the Radio 3 stage and the Siam tent.

Ìý

Programmes will include interviews from this year's festival and exclusive sessions from the Radio 3 mobile studio.

Ìý

Andy Kershaw's Monday night show will present highlights from the weekend and coverage continues throughout the following week in Late Junction with Fiona Talkington (Tuesday - Thursday, 11.15pm- 01.00am).

Ìý

Over the three days Asian Network specialist DJs Bobby Friction, Nerm and Pathaan will be spinning a mix of globetronica, drum 'n' bass and heavyweight bhangra beats in the 91Èȱ¬ Asian Network Tent, located next to the Siam Tent in the main festival area.

Ìý

The Radio 3 website will link to each programme featuring performances from the festival and will feature an archive of audio material from the festival for up to a year after broadcast.
