Newsnight election night opinion poll


The Labour Party is seen as divided (64%) and sleazy (59%) by two-thirds of those interviewed for a 91Èȱ¬ Newsnight opinion poll to be broadcast this evening on 91Èȱ¬ Two.

When asked in the poll whether they thought the political parties were sleazy, 59% said it applied to the Labour Party, 47% said it applied to the Conservatives, and 30% said it applied to the Liberal Democrats.

Sixty-four per cent thought that Labour was divided, compared with 36% saying the Conservatives and with 25% saying the Liberal Democrats.

On policy, the poll suggested that less than one in five (18%) thought the Labour Party could be trusted to keep its promises, with 26% saying the Conservatives could be trusted, and 29% the Liberal Democrats.

Asked who could be trusted to run the economy, Labour is in the lead in the poll with 48% (compared with 53% in 2002), the Conservatives with 46% (27% in 2002), and the Liberal Democrats with 33% (14% in 2002).

Asked who could be most trusted to run the NHS, 30% of those polled thought Labour could, 36% said the Conservatives and 38% said the Liberal Democrats.

On immigration, only 20% polled think Labour has the right ideas to tackle immigration, compared with 37% saying the Conservatives and with 28% saying the Liberal Democrats.

On climate change, 36% think Labour have the right ideas, compared with 43% saying the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats.

When the poll asked which party has the best team of leaders, 43% said Labour, 38% said the Conservatives and 32% said the Liberal Democrats.

The polling was carried out by CommunicateResearch on behalf of 91Èȱ¬ Newsnight. They telephoned 1,001 GB adults between 27 and 29 April 2007. Data was weighted to be demographically representative of all adults.
