An old face makes dramatic return to The Archers

A controversial character made her return to Ambridge in 91Èȱ¬ Radio 4's The Archers last night (4 April 2007).
Ìý
Siobhan Donovan's (nee Hathaway) latest visit to the village is as
dramatic as her departure. She has returned to deliver some devastating
news: she has cancer.
Ìý
The serious question she has for Brian Aldridge is,
if she were to die, would he look after their son?
Ìý
Despite his grief for Siobhan, Brian wastes no time in confirming that he
will take care of Ruairi, the son he had always longed for.
Ìý
However, his
ex-mistress has to remind him that he first needs to ask Jennifer - his
wife of over 30 years - before he can make such a commitment.
Ìý
Regular listeners will know that the prospect will pose something of a
dilemma for Jennifer: Siobhan very nearly brought about the downfall of
the Aldridge's marriage and she almost caused the break-up of her near-
perfect family.
Ìý
But will she be able to take Siobhan's child to her heart
if her nemesis were to die?
Ìý
And is she prepared to have the truth about
Brian's affair, a hitherto well-kept secret, splashed across the village?
Ìý
Siobhan left Ambridge, her own marriage in tatters, after a long-standing
affair with Brian.
Ìý
A brief return to the village, and a dramatic car
accident for the lovers, confirmed once and for all that Brian had chosen
his wife over his mistress - and Siobhan fled to Germany to begin a new
relationship with another partner, Dieter.
Ìý
Absence, however, can make the
heart grow fonder, and Brian retained regular contact with his old love
and their son - often without Jennifer's knowledge.
Ìý
Towards the close of her relationship with Dieter, Siobhan discovered
that she was suffering from malignant melanoma, and subsequent medical
tests have revealed that her cancer has developed to extensive
secondaries.
Ìý
While her first concern is for the welfare of her child,
Siobhan is only too aware that Jennifer may well choose to punish her son
for the sins of his mother.
Ìý
For Brian, however, an even tougher challenge lies ahead.
Ìý
He must balance
his feelings of grief for the woman he still loves, with the knowledge
that he has to convince Jennifer to take his child into their home... but
how far is Brian prepared to go to get his wish?
