Bollywood stars introduce Satyajit Ray's famous Detective Feluda to global audience

Two of Bollywood's finest actors, Rahul Bose and Anupam Kher, feature in a special 91Èȱ¬ World Service dramatisation of Feluda: The Golden Fortress on Saturday 10 February.

Ìý

Rahul Bose plays Bengali super-sleuth Feluda. Anupam Kher is his sidekick, the bumbling crime writer Lalmohan Ganguly.

Ìý

Detective Feluda, a much-loved character in India, is the creation of film director and writer Satyajit Ray who wrote 35 stories about him.

Ìý

Though Feluda is familiar to film and television audiences in India, this is the first time the detective's exploits have been dramatised for 91Èȱ¬ World Service and the first time Bollywood stars have acted in a World Service drama.

Ìý

Writer Ray Grewal, who adapted The Golden Fortress, describes Feluda as a combination of Sherlock Holmes, Tintin and Indiana Jones.

Ìý

"People often think that plays work better on radio when listeners use their imaginations to see the story," he says.

Ìý

"Feluda is so well known in India that people have very clear ideas about who he is and what he sounds like. But millions of 91Èȱ¬ listeners around the world will not be familiar with him.

Ìý

"This is our chance to put one of India's best known characters on the international map."

Ìý

Producer Anne Edyvean made the decision to record the drama in Mumbai, the heart of Bollywood.

Ìý

"Who better to capture Feluda, his friends and his foes than actors who have grown up reading his adventures and enjoying his escapades," she says.

Ìý

"I am convinced their interpretation will win Feluda millions of new fans around the world."

Ìý

Feluda: The Golden Fortress is part of 91Èȱ¬ World Service's India Rising season, nine days of special programming from and about India, which runs from Saturday 3 February to Sunday 11 February 2007.
