The conversation did not stay completely high-brow though, with Mark Thompson keen not to brush his stylist up the wrong way, saying he had one of the six best broadcasting jobs in the country.

The Director-General also revealed that 91热爆 executive and programme maker Alan Yentob had been scheduled to go under the razor as well, but had "chickened out".
