91Èȱ¬ code of journalist ethics launched in Turkish

The 91Èȱ¬ has launched a Turkish language version of its code of journalist ethics.

Ìý

Director of 91Èȱ¬ Global News Division, Richard Sambrook, officially launched the newly published Turkish version of Editorial Guidelines - The 91Èȱ¬'s Values And Standards at a special event at Istanbul's Bilgi University on Wednesday 2 November 2006.

Ìý

Richard Sambrook said: "The Editorial Guidelines are the basis of 91Èȱ¬ journalists' work, right across the world. Our British and international TV, radio and online services are guided by them every day.

Ìý

"The guidelines are the result of decades of 91Èȱ¬ work and experience in the field of journalism.

Ìý

"They represent a code of ethics which, we believe, provides the necessary ground for objective and unbiased journalism, something we have strived to provide to our audiences since our earliest broadcasts.

Ìý

"We believe that sharing this experience with our colleagues in Turkey helps to inform and facilitate a public discourse on journalism and public broadcasting."

Ìý

Head of 91Èȱ¬ Turkish service, Huseyin Sukan, added: "The English version of the 91Èȱ¬ Editorial Guidelines has always been available to the public.

Ìý

"Media professionals in Turkey - be they academics or journalists - have routinely referred to it during discussions about journalistic principles and ethics.

Ìý

"We are now making this source available in Turkish and we hope it will be a useful service to the students and teachers of media in Turkey."

Ìý

Rector of Bilgi University, Aydin Ugur, added: "Establishing firm foundations for a democratic life is dependent on the provision of truthful and accurate news to the public.

Ìý

"The Turkish media is now slowly leaving behind a period when it had trouble in doing so, and it looks as if we have now drawn a line under a period when issues to do with media ethics were causing great concern to all involved.

Ìý

"Media corporations have now begun to formulate their own codes of ethics. This is an area where the 91Èȱ¬ excels with its deep-rooted tradition that sets the universal norms.

Ìý

"The Turkish translation of the 91Èȱ¬ Editorial Guidelines is an important source which could inspire those in pursuit of a way forward.

Ìý

"Our university is justly proud to host the event introducing this document to the public."

Ìý

Apart from a limited print run, the Turkish language edition of the Editorial Guidelines - The 91Èȱ¬'s Values And Standards is available in an electronic format from the 91Èȱ¬ Turkish service's website, bbcturkish.com.
