Radio 3 Awards for World Music - nominations 2007

The 91Èȱ¬ Radio 3 Awards for World Music celebrate their sixth birthday with a dazzling set of nominations, ranging from New York's acclaimed gypsy punk band Gogol Bordello to Grammy-nominated Anoushka Shanka.
Ìý
World Music greats such as the late Ali Farka Toure and Gotan Project are represented, alongside newcomers like Nuru Kane and Etran Finatawa, and festival favourites Ska Cubano.

The nominated artists were announced on Friday 27 October 2006 at WOMEX (World Music trade fair) in Seville, Spain.

The nominees have been voted for by the delegates of WOMEX.
Ìý
The Album of the Year category is decided by a world panel of critics organised by fRoots Magazine and voting for the final category, the Audience Award, opens on 1 January 2007.

The winners will be announced on 31 March 2007 on Radio 3's World Routes programme and the Winners' Concert will be held on Sunday 27 May 2007 at the Barbican in London, when the winner of the Audience Award will be announced.

The concert will be broadcast on Radio 3, on 91Èȱ¬ FOUR and will be available online.

Past winners of The Radio 3 Awards for World Music include many of the greatest figures in World Music - such as Mariza, Khaled, Manu Chao, Nitin Sawhney, Ry Cooder and the late Ibrahim Ferrer.

The Awards are a unique collaboration between Radio 3, WOMEX, fRoots, Songlines, the Rough Guides and Serious and the aim is to provide a showcase for the very best in world music.

A compilation CD will be released on the Manteca label in April next year featuring all the nominees for 2007.

The nominations for the Awards for World Music are chosen by the delegates to WOMEX, the World Music Expo. The 2,000 delegates at the annual event each have a vote in all of the awards' categories, except for the Album of the Year and the Audience Award.

The Album of the Year is voted on by a panel of critics assembled by fRoots magazine. The Audience Award is chosen by the general public, who vote from the overall nominations list.
Ìý
In addition, music specialists at the 91Èȱ¬ World Service choose one nomination in the geographical categories Africa, Americas, Middle East and North Africa, and Asia-Pacific.

All of the nominations are then reviewed by the Awards for World Music jury (details of which can be found at bbc.co.uk/radio3) who choose the winning acts. Ìý
