Search for an Unsung Hero is under starter's orders!

The search is on to find 91Èȱ¬ East Midlands Sport's Unsung Hero for 2006 with the winner, nominated by the public and chosen by a panel of judges, picking up the coveted accolade at the 91Èȱ¬ East Midlands Sports Awards ceremony on 27 November 2006.

Ìý

At 2005's event, Lord Sebastian Coe paid tribute to the work of the unsung heroes of British sport. This event is the annual chance for those people to be recognised.

Ìý

The overall winner for the East Midlands gets the opportunity to attend the 91Èȱ¬ Sports Personality of the Year awards ceremony.

Ìý

Last year's winner was 61-year-old Bill Chambers, a school caretaker from St Ann's in Nottingham. Most nights of the week he runs after-school clubs when he could be putting his feet up.

Ìý

He is regularly out on the fields and pitches coaching the children and was instrumental in the school's successful lottery bid for badminton coaching.

Ìý

After his success at the 91Èȱ¬ East Midlands Sports Awards, Bill found himself rubbing shoulders with the likes of Pele, which he described as "a fantastic experience!"

Ìý

Now the search is on to find this year's winner. 91Èȱ¬ East Midlands is looking for people who give up their time on a voluntary basis to ensure someone else gets the chance to take part in the sport they love.

Ìý

Whether it's washing the kit, making the sandwiches, providing transport or the actual coaching, the 91Èȱ¬ is asking the public to nominate their Unsung Heroes.

Ìý

To qualify, nominees must have given up their time to enable others to participate in sport; this can be helping out an individual, team or teams, in any sport, at any level.

Ìý

They must also be over 16 years of age and give their time freely, for no financial gain.

Ìý

Nomination forms are available from 91Èȱ¬ building reception areas and online at bbc.co.uk/eastmidlandstoday - the closing date for nominations is 4 November 2006.

Ìý

Mark Shardlow, 91Èȱ¬ East Midlands Sports Awards Manager, says: "We're looking for someone who helps others play sport. An Unsung Hero who has made a difference to their community."

Ìý

The East Midlands Unsung Hero will be announced at the 91Èȱ¬ East Midlands Sports Awards, supported by Sport England East Midlands, at a gala ceremony at the Assembly Rooms in Derby on 27 November 2006.

Ìý

The awards are broadcast live on 91Èȱ¬ Local Radio.
