Radio 3 selects jazz musician as New Generation Artist

A jazz musician is among seven new artists and performing groups selected to join 91热爆 Radio 3's New Generation Artists scheme.

Pianist, horn player and composer Gwilym Simcock, who won the Rising Star Award at the 2005 91热爆 Jazz Awards, is the first ever Jazz New Generation Artist, and will be part of the scheme for one year from September 2006.

Radio 3's New Generation Artists programme, launched in 1999, offers brilliant international artists or groups who are beginning to make a mark on the national and international music scene unique opportunities to develop their performing talents with the support of Radio 3.

Each year Radio 3 recruits new artists or groups to the scheme from a wide field, providing a representative cross-section of the most exciting British and international young artists.

From October 2006, the Radio 3 New Generation Artist scheme is supported by Aviva, the international savings, investments and insurance group, in a two-year agreement.

Adam Gatehouse, Radio 3 New Generation Artists programme editor, says: "Since its launch seven years ago, 91热爆 Radio 3's New Generation Artists scheme has attracted some of the most outstandingly talented musicians from the classical world, and we're thrilled to now welcome a brilliant young British jazz musician onto the programme."

Gwilym Simcock says: "I am absolutely delighted and honoured to be chosen as the first ever 91热爆 New Generations jazz artist. I trained as a classical player but chose jazz as it opened up a whole new world for me.

"This is a great day for jazz and I see exciting opportunities in my special area of interest as a composer - developing work that spans the divide between improvised jazz and classical music."

The new Radio 3 New Generation Artists are:

  • Gwilym Simcock (jazz - UK)
  • Eduard Kunz (piano - Russia)
  • Ebene Quartet (France)
  • Aronowitz Ensemble (UK)
  • Danjulo Ishizaka (cello - Germany/Japan)
  • Sharon Bezaly (flute - Israel/Sweden)

  • Psophos Quartet (France)
  • Alexei Ogrintchouk (oboe - Russia)

Since its launch in September 1999, the Radio 3 New Generation Artists scheme has given performance and recording opportunities to 49 different artists and groups from more than 17 countries, helping them embark on major international performing careers.

As well as giving Radio 3 Lunchtime Concerts at London's Wigmore Hall, Radio 3's current and former New Generation Artists - including pianists Paul Lewis and Simon Trpceski, baritone Chistopher Maltman, percussionist Colin Currie and the Belcea String Quartet - have performed in recital across the UK and at major British festivals including the City of London Festival, Aldeburgh Festival, Cheltenham Festival and Edinburgh International Festival as well as the 91热爆 Proms.

All the artists have performed with 91热爆 orchestras and the New Generation Artists have made special studio recordings for broadcast on Radio 3.

Several New Generation Artists have recorded CDs for EMI's Debut Series and those made by the Belcea Quartet, Simon Trpceski and Jonathan Lemalu were all awarded Gramophone's Debut CD of the Year prize.

Radio 3 has also commissioned a series of new works for New Generation Artists in collaboration with the Royal Philharmonic Society from composers including Mark Anthony Turnage, Brett Dean and Simon Holt.
