91Èȱ¬ Radio Derby's Breakfast Show presenter, Andy Whittaker, has been on a quest to acquire a flag for the county of Derbyshire.

Ìý

Now the search is entering the final stages, and the shortlist of three final designs is unveiled for the first time on Friday morning (4 August 2006).

Ìý

The search for a flag for Derbyshire began when Andy received an email from a listener who had recently visited Cornwall and remarked that the area had its own banner flying across the region and how the locals were obviously very proud of it.

Ìý

The question was asked why the county did not have its own flag.

Ìý

Andy and the Breakfast Show team set out to discover whether there was a flag for Derbyshire.

Ìý

Apart from a County Council coat of arms, no flag officially existed.

Ìý

Andy then decided to ask listeners for their input and designs on what the standard for Derbyshire should be.

Ìý

The Breakfast Show has been inundated with designs and input on how the flag should look.

Ìý

Now the designs have been whittled down to three finalists: Daniel Hoskins from Bakewell (whose original idea was the inspiration for one of the final three); Martin Enright from Mickleover; and Leon Summers from Chaddesden.

Ìý

Each of the finalists has been invited to join Andy on his Breakfast Show on Friday morning for the grand unveiling of the three designs on the Radio Derby website at 8.00am.

Ìý

Listeners are then invited to visit the website at bbc.co.uk/derby to choose their favourite.

Ìý

The most popular design will then become the standard for the county of Derbyshire and people will be able to fly their new flag with pride.

Ìý

Andy Whittaker says: "The enthusiasm for the idea has been mind blowing. Every day I'm being sent more and more designs from listeners who really feel passionate about the idea of a Derbyshire flag.

Ìý

"Coming up with a shortlist was very difficult - we're never going to please all of the people all of the time, but we do think we have three very striking designs."
