Five talented teenagers have today been announced as winners of the 91热爆 Proms/Guardian Young Composers Competition. Among them is the recent winner of 91热爆's Young Musician of the Year and an ambitious 13-year-old who composed for full orchestra.

Their works are to be performed by distinguished ensemble Endymion at a free 91热爆 Proms concert at Cadogan Hall on 11 August 2006.

The performances of the new works will be recorded for broadcast on 91热爆 Radio 3 on 17 August.

The winners are invited to a special winners day on 19 July where they can participate in composing workshops with other winners and highly commended entrants.

Master of the Queen's Music, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, will also attend the winner's day to share his wisdom with the future generation of composers.

Judging the eighth 91热爆 Proms/Guardian Young Composers Competition were composers Judith Bingham, Tansy Davies, Murray Gold, Colin Matthews, Fraser Trainer, Errollyn Wallen and Peter Weigold plus 91热爆 executive producer for new music Andrew Kurowksi and the Guardian's Peter Kingston, who chaired the panel.

The judges were immensely impressed by both the variety and quality of the entries.

All entrants to the competition are invited to INSPIRE - a Young Composers Forum on 11 August at which there are workshops, talks and the chance to hear the winning pieces. Up to 400 teenagers from around the country are expected to attend.

One of the world's most celebrated composers, John Adams, will attend and take questions about his work and the art of composing.

The day culminates with the evening Proms concert at the Royal Albert Hall, where John Adams conducts the 91热爆 Symphony orchestra in a programme of his own works, featuring bass Eric Owens.

In addition to hearing professional performances of their work, the winners in the Junior Category will receive keyboards supplied by Casio, while the Senior Category winners receive Sibelius Software packages.

Competition entrants were asked to compose a piece of music in any style of no longer than five minutes duration with no restriction on instrumentation.

Copies of the scores of some of the winning compositions will be available to download from bbc.co.uk/proms, a service which aims to encourage young instrumentalists to perform music by their contemporaries.
