From Wednesday 5 April, The Jazz House, 91Èȱ¬ Radio Scotland's new music show, makes itself at home on the airwaves as Stephen Duffy presents the first in a new series focusing exclusively on Scotland's growing jazz scene.

Ìý

With its finger on the pulse of Scottish jazz, The Jazz House will take listeners to the very heart of music across the country.

Ìý

Presented by jazz singer Stephen Duffy, the series showcases burgeoning talent from the jazz scene covering the length and breadth of the country.

Ìý

Featuring up-and-coming Scottish artists alongside established national and international names, The Jazz House offers music aficionados straight-ahead mainstream, folk, international and contemporary sounds, combining to make the melting pot of Scotland's jazz scene.

Ìý

Highlights of The Jazz House include:

Ìý

Special guest Bill Wells kick-starts weekly feature Jazz Bag which highlights the core discipline of improvisation as live artists are given a surprise item to look at and translate into a piece of music;

Ìý

Each week Richard Michael, irrepressible jazz enthusiast and director of Fife Youth Jazz Orchestra, presents a regular feature called The Jargon-buster where he de-mystifies the many elements of jazz music on piano;

Ìý

The Jazz House also features live guests discussing new releases as well as recordings of jazz performances in Scotland;

Ìý

The first show (Wednesday 5 April) features world class trio Reggie Washington, Ravi Coltrane and Gene Lake recorded live at The Jazz Bar in Edinburgh.

The Jazz House is on Radio Scotland from 5 April, 8.05 to 10.00pm, Wednesdays; repeated 10.05pm to midnight, Sundays. Radio Scotland is on 92-95 FM, 810 MW, digital radio and television and bbc.co.uk/radioscotland.

Stephen Duffy

Ìý

As an improvisational jazz singer, Stephen Duffy has built a significant Glasgow following, with consecutive sell-out performances at the Tron Theatre and the Glasgow International Jazz Festival.

Ìý

One of the first students to participate in the Fiona Duncan Vocal Jazz Workshops, Stephen is the only vocalist to have studied at the National Jazz Institute of Scotland, under the guidance of sax star Tommy Smith.

Ìý

Stephen's debut album I Wish I'd Met You was released in November 2004.

Ìý

On stage, he has appeared alongside some of the great names in international jazz including saxophonist Scot Hamilton and singer Madeline Eastman.

Ìý

In addition to singing, Stephen is an accomplished pianist and arranger and has performed with many of the major Scottish Big Bands as well as the National Youth Jazz Orchestra.

Ìý

He has been a frequent contributor to Radio Scotland and has presented features on vocal jazz for 91Èȱ¬ Radio 3.
