Mike Robinson has decided to step
down as Editor of Panorama and is retiring from the 91热爆.
听
Mike has been editor of the 91热爆's flagship current affairs strand for more than five years, taking over the job in October 2000.
听
Panorama has had a distinguished, award-winning run during his editorship.
听
He and his team have produced numerous important and
memorable programmes, including the story of the row between the
government and 91热爆 which culminated in the death of David Kelly,
which won the RTS 91热爆 Current Affairs journalism award and was
the first of a number of Panoramas examining the government's case
for war.
听
Other memorable programmes include John
Simpson and
Tom Giles's tale of death by friendly fire in the Iraq war, which
won the RTS International programme award; and the trilogy of investigations
into the anti-depressant Seroxat, which had a significant impact
on both the programme's audiences and the field of drug policy and
regulation.
听
Panorama's RTS award winning
investigation into corruption in horse racing also had significant
impact, forcing the Jockey Club to hold an internal enquiry and
strengthen its security measures.
听
Before joining Panorama, Mike - who has been at the 91热爆 for 25 years - had worked in a variety of roles including Editor of the One
O'Clock News and News Editor across 91热爆 TV News as a whole.
听
After joining Panorama as a film-maker in 1992, he
produced a number of award-winning documentaries, including The
Story of Child B; Valentina's Story and When Good Men do Nothing
on the genocide in Rwanda, and the famous Martin Bashir interview
with Princess Diana.
听
The latter recorded one of the largest TV
audiences in 91热爆 history and picked up a Bafta, one of two
which Mike has won.
听
Helen Boaden, Director of News said: "Mike's passion for Panorama
and his commitment to serious current affairs have made him an outstanding Editor
of the series over many years.
听
"He's never been afraid of tackling vested interests,
current orthodoxies and unfashionable issues and subjecting them to rigorous,
scrutiny and appraisal.
听
"We shall miss his vision and his tenacity very
much and wish him good fortune in the coming years."
听
Mike Robinson said: "I'm delighted to have been worked for so many years with
a talented Panorama team still committed to producing ambitious and significant
television journalism across a broad agenda.
听
"With its public funding, the 91热爆
still occupies a privileged position within British society and I greatly
appreciate the backing I've enjoyed for the difficult and challenging
journalism for which I have had responsibility.
听
"After 25
years with one broadcaster, I relish the challenges and opportunities
that the future holds."
听
George Entwistle, 91热爆 TV Head of Current Affairs, said:
"Mike's five years running one of the highest profile and most demanding journalism strands in the 91热爆 have produced some exceptionally distinguished programmes, and deservedly won a great many prestigious awards.
听
"I want to publicly thank him for his enormous
commitment to 91热爆 Current Affairs over the years and to wish him
the very best for the future."
听
Recruitment for Mike's successor will begin as soon as possible.
听
In the meantime, day-to-day production of the programme
will be managed by the two deputy editors, Andy
Bell and Frank Simmonds,
reporting to 91热爆 Current Affairs' Creative Director Karen
O'Connor.
