The Hairy Bikers' Cookbook returns
for a second helping on 91Èȱ¬ TWO, Wednesday 29 March 2006
Following their first series, warmly received by critics and viewers alike, Si and Dave, our two intrepid, funny, life-long foodies, are back this month for a second series of The
Hairy Bikers' Cookbook.
Ìý
Their search for authentic culinary and cultural experiences in all corners of the world continues with three new quests: Vietnam, Turkey and Mexico.
Ìý
Saigon is a foodie paradise. Amidst two-wheeled chaos, the boys cook shrimp and pork on sugar cane in the middle of a frenzied ferry landing, then chow down on Vietnam War fare: deep fried scorpions, coconut worms and a part of a goat that wouldn't make it onto most menus.
Ìý
They set off up the coast, but by the time they reach
Hoi An, we're down to one Hairy Biker; Si has broken his foot which
leaves Dave peddling a very large Geordie around in a rickshaw...
Ìý
Will their dream of cooking grilled cha ca fish and
crab and fish noodle soup on a junk whilst being serenaded on harps
by two beautiful Vietnamese twins come true...?
Ìý
Next our fearless pair head inland to find the real Turkey; in Cappadocia they cook a mouth-watering meze in one of the world's most bizarre landscapes and explore a strange museum of human hair.
Ìý
Refreshed by a curiously elastic ice-cream, they watch
as Turkey's greatest baklava maker lets them in on his secrets. But
biking in Turkey is no picnic, especially when the road runs along
the borders of Syria, Iraq and Iran.
Ìý
Soon they're building their
own doner kebab using sheep's tail fat before a 'relaxing' massage
in the hammam; bruised but unbowed, they make it to the strange
village of Van, complete with bizarre cats, gargantuan breakfasts
and a prehistoric monster in the lake. Or is that just the hallucinogenic
honey starting to work?
Ìý
Hot sky, buzzards, cacti and a giant red armadillo. Two men in ponchos belly
up to a mescal bar in the desert. It's Si and Dave,
doing Mexico, on Harleys.
Ìý
In the old colonial town of Oaxaca they load up
on garlic-fried crickets and 300 types of chillies, wolf down delicious
tamales and fresh tacos, before taking over the bandstand in the
town's central square and rustling up a feast of Tetelas, refried
beans and guacamole, while the locals gape, and the mariachi band
kicks in...
Ìý
Then, high up in the mountains of Chiapas, after joining
the mother of all street parties, our travellers make Mexican
hot chocolate and the world's finest chocolate pudding while eagles
fly around them.
Ìý
Finally, at Palenque, among 2,000 year old Mayan pyramids, Si and Dave look back at all the miles they've driven this year, and all the amazing people and food they've discovered. The Hairy Bikers are coming home at last...
Ìý
"Their northernness, lack
of pretension, blistering good humour and strong friendship waltzed
right into the living room, and [the format] - part travel, part
cookery, part adventure, part comedy, and all of it with very big
bikes - was an extremely happy hybrid... And they can, seriously,
cook." - The Observer Food Monthly
Ìý
"Si and Dave, the eponymous hairy bikers, are food junkies and so enthusiastic
about what they consume that you'll need more than a hobnob after watching this...
Thoroughly enjoyable stuff." - The Observer
Ìý
"Quirky and charmingly natural in front of the camera,
Simon and Dave will appeal to good-food lovers who want to explore
world cuisine without leaving the comfort of their own living room." - The Daily Express
Ìý
"The Hairy Bikers' Cookbook
is not so much a breath of fresh air as who left the bleeding door open..." - The Guardian
Ìý
The Hairy Bikers' Cookbook is produced by John Stroud (My Hero) and Vikram
Jayanti (When We Were Kings).
Ìý
It is a Big Bear Films/VIXPIX Films Production for
91Èȱ¬ TWO.
Ìý
Michael Joseph/Penguin will publish The Hairy Bikers'
Cookbook on Thursday 6 April 2006. The Hairy Bikers' Cookbook
Series 1 & 2 DVD is available to buy from Monday 15 May 2006. Ìý
Series 2
Ìý
Episode 1 - Si & Dave Do Vietnam (Part 1)
Ìý
Saigon's a foodie paradise, but two-wheeled chaos rules...
Ìý
Going with the traffic flow, Si and Dave cook shrimp & pork
on sugar cane in the middle of a frenzied ferry landing, then chow
down on Vietnam War fare: deep-fried scorpions, coconut worms, and
a part of a goat that wouldn't make it onto most menus. Ìý
Biking on up the coast, they discover the delicious
national dish pho, and crispy Hué pancakes cooked in the street
below the mysterious Cham towers.
Ìý
But by the time they reach Hoi
An, we're down to one Hairy Biker; Si has broken his foot, which
leaves Dave pedalling a very large Geordie around in a rickshaw.
Ìý
How're they going to get to Hanoi, now that Si can't
ride his motorbike? Ìý
Episode 2: Si & Dave Do Vietnam (Part 2)
Ìý
Si's broken foot forces our Hairy Bikers onto the world's slowest train, crawling towards Hanoi (luckily there's scorched dried squid for snacks).
Ìý
In Hué, Dave manages to pedal Si's rickshaw
to the Emperors Palace, to cook paddy-field pork, spring rolls and
sticky rice in a monsoon.
Ìý
Then it's on to Hanoi and the delights
of a motorized handicapped cart, ferrying the boys between two
extremes of Vietnamese cuisine: French super-chef Didier's mouth-watering
buffet, and a local bar's own street-food surprise (Si thinks it's
duck, Dave thinks it's suckling pig. Both are wrong).
Ìý
Their final
destination is the stunning Ha Long Bay, to grill cha ca
fish and make crab and fish noodle soup on a junk. With two beautiful
Vietnamese twins serenading them with harp music, our weary adventurers
experience heaven at last...
Ìý
Episode 3: Si & Dave Do Turkey (Part 1)
Ìý
Not for our intrepid cooks the tourist traps of the Mediterranean coast. Instead, Si and Dave head inland to find the real Turkey, and the legacy of the incomparable Ottoman cuisine.
Ìý
Their travels take them to Cappadocia, where they cook
a mouth-watering meze in one of the world's most bizarre landscapes,
and onwards to explore a strange museum of human hair.
Ìý
A curiously
elastic ice-cream provides refreshment along the way, and Turkey's
greatest baklava maker lets them in on his secrets.
Ìý
Finally they
reach Sanliurfa, just north of Syria, where they treat the
locals to Sultan's Delight cooked on a rooftop. Ìý
Episode 4: Si and Dave do Turkey (Part 2)
Ìý
Biking in Turkey is no picnic, especially when the road runs along the borders of Syria, Iraq and Iran.
Ìý
But in between dodging the oil tankers and military
convoys, Si and Dave get down to more serious matters, such as
building their very own doner kebab (the sheep's tail fat is essential).
Ìý
After that, it's time for a relaxing massage in the
hammam - or as
it turns out, a session of ruthless GBH.
Ìý
Bruised but unbowed,
the boys make it to their destination: the strange town of Van,
complete with bizarre cats, gargantuan breakfasts, and (supposedly)
a prehistoric monster in the lake. Ìý
Or is that just the local hallucinogenic
honey starting to work? Ìý
Episode 5: Si & Dave Do Mexico (Part 1)
Ìý
Hot sky, buzzards, cacti and a giant red armadillo. Two men in ponchos belly up to a mescal bar in the desert. It's Si and Dave, doing Mexico, on Harleys.
Ìý
In the old colonial town of Oaxaca they load up on
garlic-fried crickets and 300 types of chillies, wolf down delicious
tamales and fresh tacos, before taking over the bandstand in the
town's central square and rustling up a feast of Tetelas, refried
beans and guacamole, while the locals gape.
Ìý
They befriend a mezcal
factory owner (never a bad move) and find out it's not about
the worm in the bottle at all: it's more like a religion.
Ìý
In return
they cook him chicken in Mole Negro, the fabled Oaxacan chocolate-based
spicy sauce (talk about taking coals to Newcastle) - and
then the mariachi band kicks in...
Ìý
Episode 6 - Si & Dave Do Mexico (Part 2)
Ìý
Si and Dave head into the mountains of Chiapas, land of the ancient Mayans. Outside picturesque San Cristobal, they're invited to a traditional Mayan village to cook a Pre-Hispanic Stew.
Ìý
It's a triumph - mainly because the diminutive local
women elbow the big boys aside and take over!
Ìý
After proving that
white boys can't dance at the local Salsa class, our travellers
climb a cliff to make Mexican hot chocolate and the world's finest
chocolate pudding while eagles soar above them. Ìý
Finally, at Palenque, among
2,000 year old Mayan pyramids, Si and Dave look back at all the
miles they've driven this year, and all the amazing people and food
they've discovered. The Hairy Bikers are coming home at last...
