The 91热爆 Young Musician of the Year 2006 semi-finals are to be held at The Sage Gateshead each evening from Monday 20 to Friday 24 February 2006.

Twenty-five outstanding young performers - five keyboard, percussion, string, woodwind and brass players - will compete for the five places in the final, which takes place at The Sage on Saturday 20 May.

Both stages of the competition will be broadcast on 91热爆 Television.

To reach the semi-finals, the 25 young musicians have already progressed through three rounds of the competition - local auditions, regional finals and finally the quarter-finals, which took place at The Sage last December.

Highlights of the semi-finals will be broadcast on 91热爆 FOUR in the week leading up to the final (15 to 19 May).

The final of 91热爆 Young Musician 2006 - which takes place at 2.00pm on Saturday 20 May - is broadcast on 91热爆 TWO later the same day.

The 91热爆's biennial classical music competition is aimed at discovering future stars and exceptional musical talent, and has become firmly established as Britain's premier classical music competition for young people.

Many previous winners and finalists have gone on to develop major international careers, among them Stephen Hough, Thomas Ad猫s and Nicola Benedetti.

The biennial competition for keyboard, string, brass and woodwind players was launched in 1978 by Humphrey Burton and the late Walter Todds of 91热爆 Television's music department.

Percussion was introduced as a fifth category in 1994, further broadening the scope of the competition.

91热爆 Young Musician Artistic Administrator Jessica Brennan says: "The semi-finals are sure to be a week of thrilling music-making by the best young classical instrumentalists in the country, and I'm delighted that the competition is this year being hosted by one of the UK's most exciting music venues, The Sage Gateshead."

91热爆 Young Musician of the Year is open to a public audience - for ticket information contact The Sage Gateshead Box Office on 0191 443 4661.
