Coldcut have produced a Video Jockey (VJ) mix of their new single for 91Èȱ¬ Radio 1 and 1Xtra, using Creative Archive Licensed content to show what can be done with the technology.

Ìý

The Ninja Tune duo - renowned VJ artists - were asked by the 91Èȱ¬ to create a mix of Everything is Under Control for the Superstar VJ minisite, using the archive of programme extracts available under the terms of the Creative Archive Licence.

Ìý

VJing is the art of mixing and scratching visuals to music, which usually happens in club but it is fast becoming an art form in itself.

Ìý

The specially commissioned mix - which will not be commercially available - will inspire would-be VJs to enter the Superstar VJ competition, which runs to the end of October.

Ìý

Around 250,000 users have visited the Superstar VJ site - at bbc.co.uk/radio1 - since its launch last month.

Ìý

Many of them have taken part in the competition to build a three minute VJ mix from the clips available and a OneMusic backing track.

Ìý

The competition runs until the end of October, then the judging panel - which includes Coldcut - will choose a winner who will receive mixing equipment and the chance to VJ live to a mix of their choice on Radio 1 or 1Xtra.

Ìý

VJs can use the content for non-commercial purposes but, if they were hired to VJ in a club, they would have to seek a separate, commercial licence and pay a fee.

Ìý

Nearly 100 programme extracts from the 91Èȱ¬ archives are available for the UK public to watch, download and edit for non-commercial purposes.

Ìý

People interested in being creative with 91Èȱ¬ material are free to download and mix that footage and use it as the fuel for their own creative endeavours at bbc.co.uk/radio1 and bbc.co.uk//1Xtra.

Ìý

The footage available is taken from a whole host of 91Èȱ¬ programmes and includes a wealth of material covering natural history, wildlife, science, locations, art and more.

Ìý

To aid the creativity of the audience there are also gems including shots of cityscapes, sunsets, seascapes and many other stunning visuals.

Ìý

To ensure that the material is available to as wide an audience as possible, it will be made available in QuickTime, Windows Media and MPEG1 formats.

Ìý

The 91Èȱ¬ will be releasing further content across other areas of bbc.co.uk over the next 18 months.

Ìý

The Superstar VJ site can be found at bbc.co.uk/radio1/superstarvjs.
