James Brown and Joss Stone rip it up with Jonathan Ross
Friday 1 July on 91Èȱ¬ ONE (repeated on
91Èȱ¬ THREE on Sunday 3 July)
On the eve of Live 8, Bob Geldof gatecrashes
Friday Night with Jonathan Ross to
introduce an all-star line-up for the last show in the current run.
Ìý
In a rare television interview, The Godfather of Soul
James Brown joins Jonathan Ross to look
back at his 50 year singing career...
Ìý
His friendship with Elvis: "We
were very close: I wanted to wear tight pants but he was first." Ìý
His experience as a black artist: "If someone called you a black,
that was negative; I try to take the negative and make a positive. When
I see a kid they're not black or white, I just see a kid."
Ìý
He discusses his longevity as a performer: "I [still]
do everything except the splits. I had a bad experience (prostate) - for
a long time I was ill and never knew it.
Ìý
"I dance fast, the little bit
I knew I now do better... I didn't think at my age (72) I'd still be respected."
Ìý
And on his forthcoming appearance at Live 8 in Edinburgh: "There's
a lot of people who need our help. I'm begging you [to watch]: they need
us."
Ìý
Jonathan also welcomes to the show Ricky Gervais,
with the first-ever UK sneak preview of his forthcoming 91Èȱ¬ TWO series
Extras.
Ìý
The series stars, among others, Ben Stiller,
Kate Winslet, Les Dennis and Samuel
L Jackson.
Ìý
"They play twisted versions of themselves,"
he says. "They came on board because they were fans of The Office."
Ìý
But not all Americans are as appreciative. "Clint
Eastwood apparently said, 'Who the f*** are they?' which is my favourite
quote.
Ìý
"[In Extras] I play Andy Milman, a struggling extra.
I get bit parts in films. Kate Winslet plays a nun hiding people from
the Nazis and I approach her to ingratiate herself and try and get a line."
Ìý
He's already looking ahead to a second series: "We'll
do one if people watch it. I think if we got Tom Cruise we'd do two. We
wanted to do something that wouldn't be compared to The Office."
Ìý
Gervais also reveals that he turned down an acting role
in Mission Impossible 3 as well as a role opposite George Clooney: "I'm
doing For Your Consideration (Christopher Guest's new film) - I'm happier
with that."
Ìý
Completing this final week's line-up is teen soul singing
sensation Joss Stone, also performing at Live 8, who
famously didn't know who Bob Geldof was.
Ìý
"I've no idea what to expect [at Live 8]. I wasn't
around for Live Aid... I didn't know who he was - they never let me live
it down."
Ìý
And in an electrifying finale to the series, Stone joins
Brown for an impromptu storming rendition of his classics - including
Sex Machine and It's a Man's World - performed live in the studio.
