Singers named for finals of singing 'Olympics'



The five finalists have been named for the 91热爆 Cardiff Singer of the World 2005 competition, which is being held at St David's Hall, Cardiff this Sunday evening (19 June).

They are: Nicole Cabell, soprano, USA; Luis Olivares Sandoval, tenor, Chile; Wendy Dawn Thompson, mezzo, New Zealand; Daria Masiero, soprano, Italy; Andrew Kennedy, tenor, England.

The finalists of the 91热爆 Cardiff Singer of the World competition were selected from 507 singers chosen to audition out of more than 700 applicants worldwide.

Three of the finalists have also been selected for the finals of the Rosenblatt Recital Series Song Prize which runs alongside the main competition - Nicole Cabell, Wendy Dawn Thompson and Andrew Kennedy.

Completing the line-up of finalists for the prize are Quinn Kelsey, baritone, USA and Georgian bass Mikhail Kolelishvili.

For the first time this competition, formerly the Lieder Prize, has its own final today (Friday 17 June).

91热爆 Radio 3 will broadcast the final on Saturday evening (18 June) and it will be broadcast by 91热爆 FOUR on Saturday 9 July.

The biennial competition is renowned for giving competitors valuable exposure and leverage into professional opera careers.

This year's competition also forms part of Cardiff's celebrations marking 100 years as a city and 50 years as the capital of Wales.

Past winners have included Lisa Gasteen, Karita Mattila, Dmitri Hvorostovsky and Katarina Karneus, all of whom have been become star names at the world's opera houses.

International opera star Bryn Terfel won the Lieder prize in 1989.

The 91热爆 Cardiff Singer of the World 2005 final is broadcast on Sunday on 91热爆 TWO at 6.30pm, presented by Huw Edwards and Aled Jones. Radio 3 will also transmit the final.
