It was north Wales' night at the annual 91Èȱ¬ Radio Cymru RAP (Rock and Pop) Awards as its bands swept the board in the sixth award ceremony in its history.

Relative newcomer Alun Tan Lan, from Pandy Tudur near Llanrwst, took both Best Composer award and Best Male Artist award.

Having just finished touring with Super Furry Animals' Gruff Rhys, Alun has captivated audiences throughout Wales with his magical tunes and perceptive lyrics.

Festiniog's Frizbee also completed a double winning Best Pop Band and Best Up-and-coming Band, with fellow Ffestiniog lads, Anweledig's Byw EP winning the Best EP of the Year.

Carmarthen's Texas Radio Band fought back for west Wales, snatching the Best Album title with the critically acclaimed Baccta Crackin' plus winning the Radio Cymru listener-voted Band of the Year award.

Other winners were Anglesey's Elin Fflur for Best Female artist and Cardiff-based Sibrydion for Best C2 Session.

Porthmadog's own Pep Le Pew and Dyl Mei also won, Best Live Band and Best Producer award respectively, with the town's popular annual festival Miri Madog taking the listener-voted award of Best Live Event of 2004.

Some of the brightest young stars of the music scene in Wales turned up for tonight's event in Neuadd Pritchard Jones, Bangor, where Pep Le Pew, Frizbee, Ashokan, Alun Tan Lan and Gwyneth Glyn all gave fantastic performances.

One of the highlights of the evening was the Award for Outstanding Achievement, presented to an individual who has made a valuable contribution to the industry in Wales.

This year's winner is Toni Schiavone, who has for more than 20 years tirelessly worked to promote the Welsh language music scene.

The ceremony was hosted by C2 presenters Dafydd Du, Huw Stephens, Dylan Wyn and Lynsey Anne.

The RAP Awards will be broadcast on Radio Cymru on Monday 21 February at 8.00pm and repeated on Saturday 26 February at 11.00am.
