Kelly Holmes is 91热爆 Sports Personality of the Year 2004



Athlete Kelly Holmes was tonight crowned 91热爆 Sports Personality of the Year 2004.

Kelly was presented with the trophy for being the sports personality who most captured the public imagination in 2004.

Kelly took two gold medals from this year's Athens Olympics, in the 800m and 1500m.

Her wide-eyed disbelief after taking her first gold in the 800m final will be one of the lasting memories of the games.

On receiving the award, Kelly said: "After 20 years of dreaming I finally got my dream once not twice.

"This [Sports Personality of the Year] is the biggest sporting honour your country can give you and for that I would like to thank the public for voting for me."

She also her thanked her coaches as well as her family and friends.

Matthew Pinsent came second, with cricket's Andrew Flintoff coming in third place.

Great Britain's rowing Coxless Four were voted for as Team of the Year.

Matthew Pinsent accepted the award, presented by Otto Rehhagel, the coach of the Greek national football team.

Arsene Wenger is Coach of the Year for his outstanding achievement of guiding Arsenal FC to a record-breaking run of 49 unbeaten League games.

Last year's recipient of this award, Sir Clive Woodward, handed over the trophy to the Arsenal manager.

Ian Botham, one of the greatest cricket all-rounders of all time, receives the Lifetime Achievement award in recognition of the major impact he has made to the world of sport during his remarkable career.

The award was presented to Ian by Sir Vivian Richards.

Ian won the Sports Personality of the Year Award in 1981 after spearheading England's famous victory against Australia in one of the most exciting Ashes contests of all time.

The Helen Rollason Award, presented for outstanding courage and achievement in the face of adversity, was awarded to Kirsty Howard.

Kirsty was born with her heart back to front so all her other organs are misplaced. She has undergone nine cardiac procedures as a result and her condition is terminal.

In February 1999 Kirsty was given just six weeks to live but has battled on and been an inspiration to millions.

She has already raised about 拢3 million through Kirsty's Appeal which aims to raise 拢5 million to help other poorly children in the future as an everlasting legacy to her bravery.

She received her award from last year's Sports Personality of the Year, Jonny Wilkinson.

The Unsung Hero Award honours an individual who has given their time and talents for free to enable others to participate in sport.

Abdullah Ben-Kmayal won the award from a total of 15 regional winners from around the UK.

Martin Johnson, the captain of England's World Cup winning Rugby Union team, presented this award.

Andrew Murray is 91热爆 Young Sports Personality of the Year, selected from nominations made to C91热爆's Blue Peter and Xchange.

Andrew is one of Britain's brightest tennis hopes after he followed in the footsteps of tennis greats such as Stefan Edberg and Pat Cash when he won the US Open boys singles titles at Flushing Meadows this year.

Boris Becker presented Andrew with award.

This year's Overseas Personality of the Year is Roger Federer.

Roger has dominated men's tennis this year, winning three of the four Grand Slams 聳 the first man to do so since 1988.

All the results were broadcast live on 91热爆 ONE's 91热爆 Sports Personality of the Year.
