Helen Boaden, 91Èȱ¬ Director of News, has today announced a key new appointment
as part of the News Board.

This follows the appointment of Mark Damazer, formerly Deputy Director
of News, to the post of Controller of Radio 4.
Ìý
Adrian Van Klaveren, currently Head of Newsgathering,
will become Controller of Production and Deputy Director of News.
Ìý
As Controller of Production he will work closely with Peter Phillips,
Chief Operating Officer, 91Èȱ¬ News, to drive and implement strategy for
News' production processes throughout the forthcoming 91Èȱ¬ efficiency
targets.

Adrian will also deputise for Helen in her absence and will also lead
on key major editorial projects, assigned by the Director of News.
Ìý
All Heads of Department on the News Board will continue to report to
Helen Boaden editorially and managerially.

Helen Boaden said: "I am delighted that Adrian has accepted this major
new responsibility. His impressive track record, energy and strong personal
skills will serve him well in meeting the challenges that lie ahead.

91Èȱ¬ News.

Adrian Van Klaveren was appointed Head of Newsgathering in March 2000.
Ìý
91Èȱ¬ Newsgathering oversees reporting staff and more than 50 correspondents
based in UK and in 42 overseas bureaux.
Ìý
The department is also home to specialist teams of correspondents in
the fields of social affairs, business/economics and world affairs.
Ìý
From 1996 to his appointment as Head of Newsgathering, Adrian held
the post of News Editor in Newsgathering, responsible for the day-to-day
running of the news operation and co-ordination of coverage on major
stories such as the Kosovo conflict.
Ìý
Before that he was Head of Local Programmes for 91Èȱ¬ West Midlands based
in Birmingham.
Ìý
He joined the 91Èȱ¬ as a news trainee in 1983 and became a sub-editor
on the main television bulletins.
Ìý
He was a producer on the Nine O'Clock News and in 1988 rose to senior
producer, responsible for editing individual editions of the programme.
Ìý
In 1990, Adrian moved to Panorama as a senior producer.
During his time with the programme he made a number of reports on subjects
ranging from John Major, the plight of the Kurds in Iraq, the collapse
of BCCI and school testing.
Ìý
Two years later he returned to the Nine O'Clock News as Deputy Editor
and in 1994 he moved to Newsnight as Deputy Editor.
