Highest ever reach for 91Èȱ¬ Digital Radio services
91Èȱ¬ Radio commands a 53.1 per cent share of the UK radio market against
Commercial Radio's 45.0 per cent, according to figures released today
by RAJAR (Radio Joint Audience Research).
Ìý
The figures, which cover the period 22 March to 20
June 2004, show that 91Èȱ¬ share is up from last quarter (52.6%).
Ìý
The 91Èȱ¬'s reach of 32.40 million equals 66.3% of the
population, ahead of Commercial Radio's 31.36 million.
Ìý
Jenny Abramsky, Director of 91Èȱ¬ Radio & Music, said:
"I'm delighted that 91Èȱ¬ Radio is performing well across the board
and attracting such a large and loyal following.
Ìý
"I'd particularly like to congratulate Radio 2
on another record quarter; the station goes from strength to strength."
Ìý
After significant changes to the Radio 1 schedule
over the past year, the network's reach in the key target audience of
15 to 24-year-olds increased, although a dip in all other age groups
resulted in a slight loss this quarter of 123,000 to 9.73 million compared
with last quarter's figure of 9.85 million and the 9.87 million recorded
this time last year.
Ìý
When the 4 to 14 age group is included, the reach rises
to 11.53 million.
Ìý
Colin and Edith added 64,000 listeners in their first
quarter and Zane Lowe increased his weekday evening audience by 11%
to 1.75 million.
Ìý
Radio 1's share is up at 8.3%, showing an increase both
quarter-on-quarter (7.6%) and year-on-year (also 7.6%).
Ìý
Radio 2, the nation's biggest station, posted
a record reach of 13.43 million, an increase of 530,000 from last quarter
and 407,000 from last year.
Ìý
Share is up from 15.3% last quarter to 16.2% and stable
on the year (16.3%).
Ìý
Terry Wogan continues to dominate breakfast radio with
another record reach of 7.97 million.
Ìý
Johnnie Walker topped the five million mark for the
first time, making it a record quarter for Radio 2's drive time programme.
The picture in Radio 3 is one of stability. From its record 2.29
million last quarter the network dropped back slightly to 2.02 million
but is up 21,000 year-on-year.
Ìý
Its share is stable at 1.1%.
Ìý
Radio 4 enjoyed a strong quarter this time round,
increasing its reach to 9.51 million, adding 136,000 to last quarter's
figure, but was slightly down compared with this time last year (9.70
million).
Ìý
Share remains stable quarter-on-quarter at 11.0% compared
with 11.4% in 2003.
Radio 4 remains the biggest and most listened to station in London:
nearly a quarter of all adults in London listen (23.5%) giving it a
share figure of 14.2%.
Ìý
Radio Five Live - which now reports a combined
reach figure with its digital service Five Live Sports Extra - dropped
back from 6.52 million last quarter to 6.15 million.
Ìý
Its share also fell from an all time record 5.1% to
4.5%. (Year-on-year figures are not yet available for the combined service).
Ìý
Taken separately, Five Live's reach for this quarter
is up year-on-year but in a period which traditionally starts to see
a drop is down from last quarter's 6.48 million to 6.09 million.
Ìý
Sports Extra's reach is up at 415,000 from 369,000
last quarter.
Ìý
The 91Èȱ¬'s Local and Regional Radio weekly reach
of 10.20 million is on a par with last year's figure of 10.15 million,
helped by Radio Ulster achieving its highest ever weekly reach
under current RAJAR methodology at 552,000 listeners (41% of Northern
Ireland's adult population).
Ìý
91Èȱ¬ London 94.9 also fared well, recording its
highest ever share of listening (2.1%) and a marked increase in weekly
reach both on the previous quarter and year-on-year, at 539,000 (5.2%).
Ìý
91Èȱ¬ Radio Suffolk recorded its highest ever weekly
reach this quarter, with 135,000 listeners (31.9%).
Ìý
Of the 91Èȱ¬'s new digital services, 1Xtra's reach

to 493,000 from 383,000 and continues to reach over a fifth of all Asians
across the UK.
Ìý
The combined reach of these services is 1.70 million.
Ìý
The 91Èȱ¬ World Service's reach is up to 1.37 million
from 1.32 million last quarter.
