Ghana's President John Kufuor has told 91热爆 World Service that the United Nations peacekeeping force being deployed in Ivory Coast should help one of the region's most dangerous conflicts to be resolved.

President Kufuor chairs the economic community of West African states, ECOWAS, and is leading international efforts to resolve the conflict in Ivory Coast.

"If you talk of the problems next door in Cote d'Ivoire, these are problems that could impinge on Ghana with some devastation. Any government worth its salt wouldn't sit by and let an overspill of those problems," he said.

"I want to be able to have a positive leverage on the situation and help restore peace and democracy to that country."

President Kufuor is currently seeking a second presidential term in elections to be held later this year.

In an interview in London with 91热爆 World Service he said Ghanaians knew why he was spending time on foreign policy.

"Ghanaians know that our immediate neighbours are embroiled in troubles. They also know that for as long as the neighbourhood is on fire we won't have peace. So they want their president to lead the putting out of the fires," he said.

Mark Doyle's interview with President Kufuor was broadcast on The World Today programme on 91热爆 World Service.
