ONE gives thumbs up to text messaging in the latest Test the Nation
On
Saturday 6 September on 91Èȱ¬ ONE, Anne Robinson and Phillip Schofield
will invite viewers to text their answers in what is one of the
most ambitious mobile phone related projects on British Television.
Participants
of Test the Nation: The National Quiz will be able
to send their answers to the 70 general knowledge questions posed
in the programme and the aim is to send their scores back to them
before the results are announced in the second part of the programme.
Mobile
phone users will be required to text in either A, B, C or D to the
questions given out on air, utilising their phone 'write message'
function in much the same way as a pen and papers is used.
The
programme will contain a total of five sections of questions and
therefore five prompts for mobile phone participants to send their
answers in.
Anne
Robinson will explain how simple it is to do it via the mobile phone
– moving the proposition away from just appealing to text
savvy users.
The
programme is produced by UK independent, Talent Television and the
texting capability has been provided by WHOOSH.
John
Kaye Cooper, Creative Producer at Talent Television, said:
"It
has been immensely rewarding working with 91Èȱ¬i and WHOOSH to broaden
the interactive opportunities of Test the Nation.
"The
technological breakthrough that now enables viewers to participate
live by texting in their answers for a 70 question quiz on their
mobile and receive their results is a terrific step forward for
the programme."
Six
groups and a selection of celebrities will take the test live on
the night, answering questions from a variety of categories.
Colin
'Cooperman' Cooper has devised the scoring system, unique to the
show, which will determine the national average, giving a cross
section of the nation's general knowledge.
Can
the group of all male plumbers plumb the depths of their minds to
achieve a good result or will the estate agents gazump them?
Will
it be testing times for the examiners or will they be beaten by
the cabin crew who aim to soar to new heights?
Will
the all female group of domestic goddesses sweep the board or will
they be kicked in to touch by the football supporters?
Maybe
the celebrities, who include Leslie Grantham, Josie d'Arby, Clarissa
Dixon-Wright, Darren Campbell, Laurence Llewellyn-Bowen, Sally Lindsay
and Ed Byrne, will hog the limelight and get the applause –
who knows?
Viewers
can also take the test online via the website and digital viewers
can press the red button and take the test interactively.
A panel
of experts, including Dr Colin Cooper and Jane Allen (co-founder
of the International Quizzing Association), will be on hand to assess
the scores and see which group scores the highest.

What
is general knowledge?
Test
the Nation: The National Quiz will explain what general knowledge
really is and enable the viewers to determine their own score.
Essentially
general knowledge is information that is easily available to the
'interested layman' - it is culturally valued knowledge, specific
or relevant to the country in which that person lives.
With
this in mind the nation will once again be put to the test by Anne
Robinson and Phillip Schofield.
Dr
Colin Cooper, the brains behind the IQ test from earlier in the
year has devised a scoring system and will be there to help proceedings
along.
