WALES

Nicola Heywood Thomas attracts worldwide audience

When Nicola Heywood Thomas broadcasts her Radio Wales lunchtime programme from the 91热爆 studios in Cardiff, she tries to picture her listeners who are tuning in from rural Pembrokeshire and driving up the A470.

"It's important to get a feel for the audience," explains Nicola.

"As the programme is a live debate we have a lot of interaction with the listeners and we get to know them very well."

Nicola had never imagined her audience tuning in from ski resorts in France, horse ranches in America and even beach-side towns on the east coast of Australia.

But once the emails started flowing in through her she realised that her programme reach was far greater than she ever imagined.

"I receive emails from places you wouldn't think would have Radio Wales listeners, like the Wrexham fan from Rhosddu who listens in the desert conditions of Dubai in a heat of 42 degrees!

"He got most excited about an item we did on the club.

"And following the live link-up we did with the American Radio station WKCB the amount of emails from America increased dramatically!"

The amount of e-mails received from all corners of the globe is a testimony to Nicola's cross-country appeal.

"The programme brings a taste of contemporary Wales to people's lives," she says, "wherever they are.

"And it's not only ex-pats who listen to the programme.

"I recently received an email from a Jichen Xu from Shanghai in China who wrote in to say that he enjoyed the programme and thought it was wonderful."

With the recent technological developments in the world of broadcast, 91热爆 Wales radio programmes have become accessible to listeners all over the world through the worldwide web, digital radios, Sky Digital and cable.

It will also be available on Freeview channel 89 from today (Thursday 21 August 2003).
