91Èȱ¬ Radio Cymru announces exciting new season

As 91Èȱ¬ Radio Cymru announced a new season of programmes today (Wednesday 6 August), it revealed plans for an important series reflecting the history of local eisteddfodau in Wales.

Over the next few months, Radio Cymru will be working closely with Cymdeithas Eisteddfodau Cymru (the eisteddfodau society of Wales) which is holding its annual meeting on the Eisteddfod field today.

"What better place to launch a series like this than the National Eisteddfod?" says 91Èȱ¬ Wales news presenter Garry Owen.

"Local eisteddfodau are a major part of our culture and are the backbone of the National. I, and a lot of other people, owe them a lot. This series is an opportunity to look at just how important their contribution is today and in the future."

An exciting element to the new season of programmes is a dedicated day in which a series of programmes will honour one of Wales' finest, as he celebrates his 60th birthday.

Radio Cymru will pay homage to Dafydd Iwan, by turning the Bank Holiday, 25 August, into Diwrnod Dafydd Iwan.

A series of programmes on this day takes a look back at his career, and listeners will be able to choose their top ten favourite Dafydd Iwan songs in Deg Ucha' Dafydd.

A two hour programme will look back on his 40 year singing career and will broadcast his reading of Gerallt Lloyd Owen's now infamous poem at the 1969 Urdd Eisteddfod.

Friends will also have the opportunity to pay tribute - people like Ray Gravelle and Meredydd Evans.

In another new series, Chwarae Dy Gêm, presenter Lowri Roberts looks at how sport is reflected in prose and poetry, past and present.

Presented by Derwyn Williams, Yn Y Busnes follows the goings on in Welsh business including the Corgi factory in Ammanford, which sells socks to Prince Charles, Siop Eifionydd in Porthmadog and a new PR company, Equinox.

Y Gamp Lawn is returning to bring all the excitement of the new sport season direct to Radio Cymru's listeners – from the World Cup, the latest happenings in the Welsh rugby clubs around the country and of course, all the excitement from the Welsh football games.

Twm Morus returns with a new series of Mewn Gair where he'll be looking at the meaning and history behind the Welsh language.

He's busy out and about on the Eisteddfod field at the moment collecting place names and words from the Meifod area to include in the first show.

Beti George will present a new series of Oed yr Addewid and Y Rali will be following the Caerwedros Young Farmers Club as they prepare to welcome the annual rally for the first time.

Mewn Sesiwn will hear some of Wales' most well known singers and musicians perform and explain their music, including as Tecwyn Ifan, Caryl Parry Jones, Steve Eaves and Dafydd Iwan.

Radio Cymru continues its presence at some of Wales' biggest summer festivals, bringing the buzz of all the local events to homes across the country – including Sioe'r Tair Sir in Carmarthen, The Anglesey Show and Gwyl Cefni.

"Over the next few weeks Radio Cymru will have something for everyone," says Aled Glynne Davies, the station's Editor, "from the fun in Milan where the Welsh football team will be challenging Italy, to a special programme commemorating the military coup in Chile 30 years to the day, as told by some of the Welsh people who were there or connected to it in some way."
