An
Englishman's home is his castle

North West coast near Barrow-in-Furness.

for the residents of Whitefield near Nelson may not be home
for much longer if Pendle Council wins a planning appeal.
The
second programme of the new Inside Out series on 91热爆 ONE
North West on Monday 9 June at 7.30pm turns the spotlight on two
very different Englishmen's castles.
Presenter
Tony Morris visits Piel Island where the landlord of the Ship Inn
is traditionally known as the "King of Piel" and can create
the Knights of Piel.
Tony
undergoes the investiture ceremony to become a Knight of Piel which
involves him sitting on an old oaken chair in the Ship Inn.
The
tradition arose from the time in the 15th century when Lambert Simnel,
a merchant's son, claimed to be the Earl of Warwick and the rightful
King of England and set out from Piel to London to claim his throne.
New
knight Tony must carry out his duties which include buying everyone
a drink, being a moderate smoker, an ardent lover of the opposite
sex and of good character.
One
of the rights of a knight is that, if he finds himself shipwrecked
on Piel, he may go to the inn and demand a night's free lodging
and as much as he can eat and drink.
The
residents of the old mill town areas of Whitefield in Pendle are
hoping for their own knight in shining armour to save their homes
from compulsory purchase by Pendle Council.
English
Heritage has claimed that the homes are of historical significance
and, two years ago, the residents successfully fought a public inquiry
against the council's plans to demolish their homes.
Now
they are only days away from knowing the outcome of a second public
inquiry which was called after the Deputy Prime Minister overturned
the result of the first inquiry on appeal from Pendle Council.
Inside
Out follows
residents on their fight with officialdom as the final countdown
to D-Day begins.
The
programme's cameras also exclusively follow David Morris
as he makes his bid for the World Whistling Championship.
David,
from Saddleworth, entered the competition in the USA earlier this
year after his wife spotted it while surfing the internet.
Now
he's preparing to go back to the States in July where he's being
paid several thousand of pounds to appear on stage with a swing
band in St Louis.
He's
also planning to release a CD of his whistling and to give up his
job as a sales manager to make a go of his new career.
