Voices
contributor is an award winner!
As
part of the 91热爆 Voices project, 91热爆 Radio Shropshire is working
on Woodside, a large housing estate in south Telford that is trying
hard to counter its negative public image.
Residents
there are celebrating the news that local woman Debora Vincent is
one of five nationwide winners in the Adult Learners Week Awards
2003.
Debora
is a single parent who has lived in Woodside for most of her life.
She has overcome dyslexia to become a tutor in arts and crafts at
Park Lane Youth Centre, working with other young parents on her
estate.
Adult
Learners Week (10-16 May) is billed as 'the UK's biggest festival
of learning' and is run by the National Institute of Adult Continuing
Education (NIACE).
Debora
is the overall winner for the West Midlands region and will be presented
with her award in London on Thursday 15 May.
Pat
Partridge, co-ordinator of Woodside Family Groups, says:
"Debora's
achievement is a powerful testimony to the ability of the individual
to overcome difficulties like dyslexia. It's also a great example
of how one person can make such a difference to a local community.
"I
also hope it will help prove the critics wrong about the area. For
too long people have believed that nothing good could ever come
out of Woodside. This is simply untrue. It's a great community and
Debora is one of our finest."
Voices
is a national 91热爆 venture that sees 91热爆 staff working closely with
local people, giving them an opportunity to tell their own stories.
91热爆
Radio Shropshire's project aims to raise the profile of Woodside
and celebrate its strong community spirit.
91热爆
Radio Shropshire broadcasts on 96FM.
