Care House

91Èȱ¬ FOUR, Monday 12 May, 9.00pm

Some of the residents of Rose and John's care home
Rose and her husband, John, run a care home in York for people with learning disabilities. They provide a home for around 25 people of different ages and backgrounds.

Rose is a maverick, a thorn in the side of the authorities, an uncompromising and passionate woman who is completely at odds with the majority of mental health practitioners in Britain.

This film is based around the daily routines of the household and the lives of the diverse characters who live there.

But at the centre of everything is Rose, a chain-smoking dynamo of a woman who is completely unsentimental, but fiercely protective of the people she cares for.

This film explores John and Rose Cusick's unique and often controversial approach to care.

Most of the residents at the home have learning difficulties and what is known as challenging behaviour – the kind of behaviour that in the past has got them in trouble with the law.

Before they found a home here many had spent time in prison or secure units for offences including violence and arson. Several of the residents have been classified as 'untreatable psychopaths'.

Care House explores the unique relationship between John, Rose and the residents of the care home. We witness David, 29, getting in and out of various scrapes, from being caught drilling holes through his bedroom wall to spy on a female member of staff, to stealing from a charity shop.

We follow Peter, 31, and his longing for independence. He wants to live on his own with his girlfriend. There is tragedy in his longing to be normal when you realise this will never happen.

We also see Gary left devastated as he contemplates his vicious attack on a female member of staff; Wendy and her son Ben attempting to cope with life outside the care home and Jonathan dealing with the death of his father.

This is a poignant, moving and warm film about a group of people who don't fit into society. Beneath the human stories is a subtext which questions societies' treatment of people with these kind of behavioural problems.

Care House is on 91Èȱ¬ FOUR on Monday 12 May at 9.00pm.
