Graham
takes 'final whistle' at 91热爆 Radio Derby
After
a quarter of a century as the voice of Derby County, 91热爆 Radio
Derby's Rams commentator Graham Richards has decided
to hang up his microphone.
Graham
has been loved by the listeners for 'telling it like it is' over
the last 25 years and has outlasted at least nine Rams managers!
During
his remarkable broadcasting career, fans have been heard chanting
'There's only one Graham Richards' on the terraces and he's been
both sued and banned from the Baseball Ground by the former chairman
Robert Maxwell!
Graham
began his radio career at 91热爆 Radio Nottingham, but got a transfer
to 91热爆 Radio Derby's sports team in 1977.
Leaving
at the end of the season he's revealed his favourite games include
the famous 2-1 win at Arsenal in 1989; the victory over Crystal
Palace to secure promotion in 1996 and the great day at Old Trafford
in 1997 when Paulo Wanchope scored on his debut in the 3-2 defeat
of Manchester United.
"Cool
as custard"; "Gascoigne has behaved like a spoilt fat
brat"; "Mr Maxwell, be gone"; "Dig that one
out of the net Mark Crossley," and "Shilton's dropped
it" are just some of the many 'Grahamisms' uttered by him in
his 25 years of commentating.
His
unique style has contributed to 91热爆 Radio Derby's Sportscene
being a huge success. It's believed to be the most successful Saturday
afternoon show in 91热爆 Local Radio. Around half the radios switched
on locally on a Saturday afternoon are tuned to the station's commentary.
Ross
Fletcher takes over as the main commentator from next season.
Former Rams player, Ian Hall will continue to offer expert
summaries on matches, and Graham won't be disappearing altogether
as he's going to make occasional guest appearances.
Simon
Cornes, Managing Editor, 91热爆 Radio Derby, says: "Graham standing
down as our main Rams commentator is a landmark in the station's
history. His voice has guided hundreds of thousands of listeners
over the years through the highs and lows on the pitches of the
Baseball Ground, Pride Park and beyond.
"The
good news for us is that Ross Fletcher is a local lad and a fan
of the Rams, so he has excellent knowledge plus bags of enthusiasm.
He'll ensure our long standing tradition of taking listeners pitchside
on matchdays, by providing the only quality and in depth coverage
of Derby County on the radio."
