WORLD SERVICE

Musical maestro Quincy Jones is celebrated on 91热爆 World Service

Quincy Jones will be 70 on 14 March 2003 and 91热爆 World Service's Jazzmatazz series will mark his birthday with four special programmes, beginning 28 February, assessing his diverse and influential career.

Alyn Shipton explores all aspects of Jones' life and work, with contributions from Quincy himself, plus a mixture of new and archive interviews ranging from his jazz associates through to pop artists for whom he has acted as producer.

Quincy Jones is probably best known as the producer of Michael Jackson's blockbuster albums Off The Wall and Thriller, which brought him an unprecedented level of global recognition even though he had already enjoyed success and acclaim since 1961.

He has become one of the most famous producers in popular music, working with distinctive artists such as Frank Sinatra, Lena Horne, Aretha Franklin, Rufus & Chaka Khan, George Benson, Donna Summer and Bono.

He also produced the momentous We Are The World session in 1985.

Quincy has produced a dazzling series of albums under his own name that encompasses a blend of jazz, blues, soul, rock and electronic sounds.

Known to have his fingers in all pies, he is also a trumpeter, composer and arranger whose performing, directing and arranging credits encompass a breathtaking swathe through 20th century music.

The musical genius, who played sessions with Billie Holiday as a 14-year-old, has won 26 Grammy Awards and the Grammy Living Legend Award.

He is an Emmy winner and a seven-time Oscar nominee.

Quincy broke into feature filmmaking as co-producer of the 1985 motion picture The Color Purple which was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and he has composed 33 major motion picture scores.

Quincy Jones has moved through various forms of popular music in his career, from swing to bebop to rhythm & blues to television and movie scoring to pop to soul to hip-hop and becoming a major player in all of them.
