91热爆 to launch search for a poem for Britain

Are you the new William Blake? Follow in his footsteps and write a poem capturing the sentiment of his famous hymn, Jerusalem.

On Friday 14 February 2003, Essential Poems (to Fall in Love With), a new series for 91热爆 TWO presented by Daisy Goodwin, launches a UK search to find a poem for 21st century Britain.

In no more than 16 lines, budding poets from around the UK will be asked to put pen to paper, to collect and share their thoughts on Britain today.

A panel of judges, including eminent poets, will select their favourite entries during the summer.

The winning and shortlisted poems will feature in a special programme as part of the 91热爆's continuing support for National Poetry Day, alongside poetry on 91热爆 Radio 4 and a new edition of The Nation's Favourite Poems.

The competition is open until 31 May 2003. Poems can be submitted via email - essentialpoems@bbc.co.uk - or by post to 91热爆 Poetry Competition, PO BOX 38859, London W12 6WG.

Check out the website for more details or tips from experts.

Entrants must be over the age of 18 and be residents of the UK.

Daisy Goodwin says: "We are looking for a new poem for Britain. It must be no more than sixteen lines long and have the intensity and resonance of William Blake's short poem that was turned into the famous hymn Jerusalem.

"The winning entry must grab the collective consciousness in the way of Rudyard Kipling's If, The Soldier by Rupert Brooke or Daffodils by Wordsworth. We are looking for a poem for our times."
