Five
Live competition winner will flatten Wembley's twin towers
Five
Live listener Ray Tidmarsh from Dawlish in Devon was named today
as the competition winner who will demolish Wembley Stadium's famous
twin towers.
Tidmarsh
will bring down football's most famous landmark with a press of
the button to set off the demolition process later this month.
He
won the unique prize in a week long competition on Five Live's Breakfast
programme.
He
correctly identified clips of some of the most historic events hosted
at Wembley, from the 1948 Olympic Games to the 1985 London Live
Aid concert, and was judged to have composed the best tie breaker.
His
winning entry was: "I would like to be involved in the demolition
of Wembley's twin towers and the rebuilding of the national stadium
because 聟. What a hat-trick - historic old - fabulous new and
a great future. To be part of that ... tremendous."
Tidmarsh
will travel to London later this month to take the starring role
in the demolition, which is the climax of the dismantling of Wembley's
famous stadium before a new, bigger and better stadium is built
on the site, to open in 2006.
It's
a truly one-off prize, but just so he has something to remember
the day by, he will also take home a souvenir piece of the rubble
along with some priceless memorabilia from Wembley's glorious history.
Wembley
Chief Executive Michael Cunnah said: "When the towers come
down it will be a genuinely momentous day, marking the end of one
era and the beginning of a great new one. Ray's entry captured the
excitement perfectly."
The
day of the demolition day has yet to be set, but is likely to be
later this month.
